Ionic bond • Electrons “pop off” and move to the other atom • Each atom is now an ION. One is positive, the other negative • The atoms are attracted to each other. Opposites attract • This is a “Vegas wedding” because they can come apart easily. (just needs water)
Covalent bond • No electrons leave their atom • Electrons are needed by each atom, so they share the ones they do have • This is a powerful bond, a “REAL marriage” based on sharing
