As a reader, what questions do you have? Think “so what”? “What does that have to do with what you’re trying to prove? ” 2. Highlight circle reasoning (saying the SAME thing, just in different words). 3. Read it aloud as you revise and edit!

Thursday: General Comments As you finalize Essay 4: • Remember: your 4 th essay technically isn’t due until Tuesday, but if you want my comments in time to work on another revision, give it to me by TOMORROW. • Remember: Controlling thought (A is B)… Do NOT write the X, Y & Z – it causes you to think you have a controlling thought and you don’t. • Remember: Borrow language from your thesis to use in your topic sentences. From First Essay Comment 1: Thesis needs a controlling thought • Two parts of a thesis: Topic & Controlling Thought • CT also known as opinion, stance, assertion… Basically, what you to prove? • Many of you had the X, Y, and Z part of the formula (which is not necessary), but a vague controlling thought. • Example: Heroes are people who possess these qualities: X, Y, and Z. • Are you suggesting that ordinary people can be heroes? Do you believe there aren’t enough people who possess these qualities? What? ?
Thursday: General Comments As you finalize Essay 4 Continued: • Remember: you just need a one-sentence summary of what the article DOES (essay 3 you needed to do the paragraph summary) somewhere in your introduction. • Remember: Use at least one or two other quotes from the article to support your ideas. • Remember: Use the checklist on the back of your directions. • Remember: Read your essay ALOUD and identify subjects, verbs and clauses.
