INVENTION CONVENTION v THESE SLIDES ARE DESIGNED TO HELP STUDENTS STRUGGLING WITH AN IDEA. v THERE ARE HELPFUL Project due date is Friday May 1 st, 2020 at 10 am. There will be a “Virtual Invention Convention” on Friday, May 1 st at noon! TIPS FOR ALL v IF YOU HAVE AN IDEA FEEL FREE TO MOVE ON

Students are to choose from the following list: § invent and build a tool § modify a tool § create an invention § create a new game or toy

TIPS o Record all information in your log book o Date every log book entry o You can change your idea-jut record the change in log book

THERE ARE FOUR (4) PARTS TO THIS PROJECT:

PART 1 SEE DAY 1 FOR MORE INFORMATION Make an inventor’s log book that you will use throughout the process of creating your invention. List ideas for a tool or invention. Brainstorm! Talk with family members, teachers or friends to think about what type of invention you could build.

PART 2 SEE DAY 4 SLIDE FOR MORE INFO Create a prototype of your tool/invention and name your invention. Your invention does not need to work, but it should look like your plan in your inventors log book. Draw your prototype in your logbook, then create it with materials around your house. The prototype can be made with materials found in the recycling bin. If the idea changes remember to record it in your logbook.

PART 3 SEE AFTER YOUR POROTYPE SLIDE FOR MORE INFORMATION Use your log book to describe how your tool or invention works. Where can you find your invention? Where will you sell it? How much will it cost? Is it for individual use or would an office, home or city use it? Include pictures or sketches.

PART 4 SEE COMMERCIAL SLIDE FOR MORE INFORMATION Create a commercial for your invention.

DAY 1

YOUR LOG BOOK CAN BE STORE BOUGHT OR HOMEMADE USE NOTEBOOK PAPER OR PRINTER PAPER FOR YOUR PAGES AND CONSTRUCTION PAPER FOR YOUR COVER MAKE A LOG BOOK LABEL THE COVER WITH YOUR NAME AND "LOG BOOK" YOU WILL KEEP TRACK OF ALL YOUR INVENTION IDEAS IN YOUR LOG BOOK MAKE SURE YOU DATE EVERY ENTRY GET CREATIVE!!

IN YOUR LOG BOOK LIST 5 THINGS YOU DO NOT LIKE TO DO. EXAMPLES: 1. TAKE OUT THE TRASH ASSIGNMENT 2. DRINK WARM WATER WHILE ON A BIKE RIDE 3. GET IN TROUBLE FOR NOT FLUSHING THE TOILET

ASSIGNMENT MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR LOG BOOK Refer back to the list you make yesterday Next to each example list 1 or 2 ways you could make your undesirable task easier. examples: 1. take out the trash- use a pully system to take the can to the curb 2. drink warm water while on a bike ride- have an insulated water bottle holder 3. get in trouble for not flushing the toilet- have a reminder to flush

ASSIGNMENT MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR LOG BOOK Go back to your list from Day 1 Narrow down your idea *if you’re having trouble narrowing down your ideas interview family members to see which would be beneficial to them Google your ideas---if you find it online then it’s already been created! *your invention needs to be a NEW idea.

AFTER YOU BUILD YOUR PROTYPE PART 3 Answer these questions in your logbook: 1. How does your tool/invention work? Be specific. 2. Who helped you build your tool/invention? 3. What problems did you encounter? 4. How did you solve those problems? 5. How would you improve your product in the future? 6. Where can you find your invention – Which stores? 7. How much would it cost? 8. Is it for individual use or would an office, home or city use it?

COMMERCIAL PART 4 You commercial can be 5 minutes long or less. This year we are going 100% virtual for the convention. While recording your commercial remember to use your answers from the questions above to describe your product. We will be posting our Inventions on Flip. Grid this year. It can be downloaded as an app or used through the website. Students are to post their Inventions on the grid for their grade level.
