Introduction to your oral based assessment Classroom Based Assessment: oral communication
What is a CBA? • A CBA stand for Classroom-Based Assessment. • CBA's have been introduced to allow students to communicate their understanding of their subject and the skills that they have learned, which could not usually be shown in the state examinations. • There will be one CBA at the end of second year and one in third year. • Both CBA's are worth 10% of your overall Junior certificate.
What do you have to do? You will have to do an oral communication This can be: • A role play • A presentation • An interview or • A conversation in response to stimulus material We will be focusing on a presentation.
Brief overview of the presentation: The presentation: A student, pair or group choose a topic or area of interest and present on this topic or interest. Students may use media and/or props. The presentation is followed by unscripted questions by the teacher. Students will be asked to make three slides person for the presentation :
Can you do this in groups? You can • • • do this: On your own In pairs In groups However each student must speak for the same amount of time and must provide a record of the part each student has played in this CBA.
How long must your part last? • Your communication topic must last between 3 -4 minutes. • If you are in a pair or a group each member must speak for 3 -4 minutes. • After you have finished, the teacher will then ask you some simple unscripted questions.
How long do you have to prepare? • You have 3 weeks to complete In these three weeks you must: • select a topic or stimulus, which you have NOT previously prepared. • decide if you are going to do this in pairs, groups or on your own. • complete the oral communication • and reflect on the overall experience
How to prepare for this CBA? • The best way to prepare is to speak German as much as you can inside and outside the classroom. • Try to meet up with each other and speak German outside the class. Maybe try practicing your communication in front of your classmates and have them give feedback. • Ask questions in class and clarify anything you are stuck on. Don't be afraid to make mistakes!
What to do if you get stuck during your communication? • You can ask the teacher to repeat the question. In German this is: Können Sie das wiederholen, bitte? OR Noch einmal, bitte. • You can ask the teacher to rephrase the question. In German this is: Ich verstehe nicht. Können Sie die Frage neu formulieren? • You can also pause to think of an answer. Take your time! Übung macht den Meister!
What happens after your CBA? After your CBA is complete you will write a reflection. On your own. In your • • reflection you will write: What part you played The materials or sources you used What went well One thing you would change
How will it be graded? Instead of receiving an A – E, with the CBA you can receive Exceptional, Above expectations, In line with expectations and Yet to meet expectations Exceptional A piece of work that reflects these features to a very high standard. The strengths of the work far outstrip its flaws. Above expectations A piece of work that reflects these features very well. The student shows a clear understanding of how to complete each area of the task. Feedback might point to the necessity to address some aspects of the work in need of further attention but, on the whole the work is of a high standard.
How will it be graded? In line with expectations A piece of work that reflects most of these features well. It shows a good understanding of the task in hand. Feedback might point to areas needing further attention, but the work is generally competent. Yet to meet expectations A piece of work that falls some way short of the demands of the Classroom. Based Assessment and its associated features. Perhaps the student has made a good attempt, but the task has not been grasped clearly or is marred by significant lapses. Feedback will draw attention to fundamental shortcomings that need to be addressed.
Let's begin! For the next ten minutes decide if you will be doing this task on your own, in pairs or in a group. Once you have decided take the rest of class to brainstorm what you want to do. While you are doing this, you will be handed out a sheet with all the important information from this Power. Point
