Sources of information There are 3 types of information sources Primary Secondary Tertiary
Primary source of information Is the first hand account of an event. Such information has no modification or interpretation
Examples of primary sources Diaries, Recordings Artifacts Manuscripts
Secondary source of information Is information created by someone who never participated in the event or experienced such a condition.
Sources of secondary information Journals Textbooks Newspapers Dissertations and theses, etc
Tertiary sources of information These are sources that: Index Abstract Organize Compile Summarize other sources
Sources of tertiary information sources Manuals Guidebooks Directories Almanacs Encyclopedias
Thesauri Are collection of words or concepts used in respective professions
Role of thesauri Helps in information retrieval in the different fields. Helps maintaining of uniformity and consistency in respective fields
Google Scholar is a hub for all scholarly writing If you are to find out the authenticity of a journal, article you can search it in google scholar. This is where all academic publishers, Institutional Repositories, universities publish their scholarly research works, citations.
Google scholar Once you find a document relevant to your study in google scholar and it is subscribed to by Makerere University, it will automatically open. If it not subscribed to then you can get the details and send for Document Delivery Services (DDS) to ckobs. angel@gmail. com who will look for such article elsewhere and deliver it to you.
Significance Google Scholar Google scholar allows to create your own online library where you can keep all the literature you would wish to refer too. In google scholar you create a personal profile which can help you follow who is citing your publications. This is of great importance especially when you want to be promoted
Google scholar also helps in the ranking of articles and finding the impact factor of a journal in the respective fields
Finding recent papers Search results in google scholar can be sorted by relevance to whatever you want If you want the most recent then you have to click on since year to show the recent articles Google scholar can be used to set email alerts in you field of study, you can even export citations
Location the full text of an article In order to get full texts only, click on the link (PDF) the full texts will appear If you click on related articles or cited by you, similar articles written by various authors can be explored
Literature searching using google Scholar Terminologies from secondary sources should be used.
