Introduction to PIP 2 IT instrumentation meeting A. Shemyakin PIP 2 IT instrumentation meeting 5 February 2018

PIP 2 IT MEBT • MEBT-3. 2 configuration is close to the final one

PIP 2 IT MEBT • MEBT-3. 2 configuration is close to the final one (from PIP 2 IT) – Prototype absorber and kickers MEBT-3. 2 Laser wire IS + LEBT RFQ MEBT Beam to dump or HWR cryomodule MEBT Final configuration of PIP 2 IT warm front end 2 A. Shemyakin | Intro 12/25/2021

Schedule • Presently PIP 2 IT is in a 4 -week shutdown to address

Schedule • Presently PIP 2 IT is in a 4 -week shutdown to address RFQ issues and several other items (including instrumentation) • Plan to start “MEBT-3. 2 run” in week of Feb 19 – Last long run before installation of cryomodules – The main goals are to demonstrate running RFQ in CW and a CW beam (highest priority) – Large list of additional studies, including instrumentation • Stop in week of Apr 9 for installation of cryo distribution system • Discussing a 3 -week run starting on July 23 to test the final MEBT absorber and the laser wire • Next beam may be in 2020 3 A. Shemyakin | Intro 12/25/2021

PIP 2 IT instrumentation work • Shutdown installation – wire scanner prototype; Bergoz ACCT,

PIP 2 IT instrumentation work • Shutdown installation – wire scanner prototype; Bergoz ACCT, vacuum chamber for the laser wire; laser hut outside of the cave • Dedicated Instrumentation shifts in weeks Feb 26 - Mar 12 – Commissioning of new instrumentation – How to operate in CW? • Presently rely on 20 Hz reading – Final numbers for instrumentation performance • E. g. RFQ transmission – Contribution to MPS work – Preparation for laser wire tests • Documentation in preparation to 2 -year break in operation 4 A. Shemyakin | Intro 12/25/2021

MPS logic • MPS: protection from possible damage by the beam • Main level:

MPS logic • MPS: protection from possible damage by the beam • Main level: protection of the overall machine – devices comparing the beam current in several locations – Likely belong to MPS • Secondary level: local protection; systems – Report of malfunctioning systems – Protection of separate elements from damage by beam • E. g. current from scrapers • Likely managed by Instrumentation. Interaction with MPS needs to be embedded into the design, taking into account time constrains 5 A. Shemyakin | Intro 12/25/2021

PIP-II design • Mechanical group plans to proceed in nearest weeks with preliminary design

PIP-II design • Mechanical group plans to proceed in nearest weeks with preliminary design of PIP-II – Warm front end is expected to be moved almost as is • MEBT is getting longer • Need to agree on basics of MPS before that – What are current-sensing devices? • Are they the same for the start and long future? – Beam interruptions (for ACCT use)? – Ring Pickups in MEBT? MEBT IS + LEBT 6 A. Shemyakin | Intro RFQ HWR Radiation cryomodule protection wall 12/25/2021
