After you have collected your research, learned the main issues, and chosen a value and criterion you can begin to outline the cases. The basic outline will look something like this:
• 6 minute Affirmative Constructive. • 3 minute Negative Cross Examination.
• 2 minute Negative Prep Time. • 7 minute Negative Constructive/ First Rebuttal.
• 3 minute Affirmative Cross Examination. • 2 minute Affirmative Prep Time.
• 4 minute First Affirmative Rebuttal. • 2 minute Negative Prep Time.
• 6 minute Second Negative Rebuttal. • 2 minute Affirmative Prep Time.
• 3 minute Affirmative Reconstructive/Rebuttal.

• Judges have to listen, take notes, & give time signals at the same time • Plan to repeat yourself – Just because you said something once does not mean that the judge heard it • They will fill out a BALLOT explaining the debate and their final decision
• Affirmative will stand, confirm, “Judge ready? Opponent ready? ” and read their speech • Debaters typically keep their own time on a stop watch or their phone • At the end Aff says, “I stand ready for cross examination, ” and Neg will begin cross examination questions • They do not look at each other but at the judge
