INTRODUCTION TO ICT IN LANGUAGE LEARNING

Using ICT in supporting Language Learning is necessity, not only to improve the effectiveness and quality of education, but more importantly to enhance the ICT literacy for teacher and students as their life skill in the era of rapidly changing and progressing technology. (Hartoyo, 2009)

There is no a universally accepted definition of ICT as its concepts, methods, and applications constantly develop and change from time to time. But ICT is an abbreviation which stands for Information and Communication Technology.

“Information means the processed data in a meaningful and purposeful form. ” (Shore 1988: 22) In language learning: acquire, transmit, and exchange to get benefit of it.

Technology derived from the word ‘techno’ which means technique, art or skill, and ‘logos’ which means science. Therefore, technology can be defined as a scientific knowledge of art or skill.

ICT includes a broad range of digital technologies mostly of electronic information-processing technologies: computers and internet, fixed-line telecommunications, mobile phones and other wireless communications, networks and so on.

ICT in General Context Standard Office Application Specialist Application word processing, spreadsheet, database software, presentation software, desktop publishing, graphics software. accounting package, computer aided design (CAD), customer relations management (CRM).

ICT IN EDUCATION ICT may be defined as technology functioning to support the process of conveying information and communication especially in education areas.

The application of ICT 1 Exposure to ‘authentic’ language; in education especially 2 language learning is inevitable. It is 3 beneficial as explained by Herington (2002) 4 that technology facilities: 5 Access to wider sources of information and varieties of language; Opportunities to communicate with outside world; A learner-centered approach; Development of learner autonomy.

Hypertext Means non-sequential reading and writing. A hypertext system allows a user to link information together, thereby creating trails through associated materials. A link connect words or sentences in one electronic document to relate information in another document. (Karent, 1988)

Advantages of Hypertext 1 Ease of tracing references 5 Ease of creating new references 2 Information structuring 6 Global views 3 Customized documents 7 Modularity of information 4 Consistency of information 8 Task stacking 9 Collaboration

Hypertext Application In Business In Information Resources In Personal Learning

"Hypermedia is defined by the presence of application control information embedded within, or as a layer above, the presentation of information. Distributed hypermedia allows the presentation and control information to be stored at remote locations. ”

Multimedia is media and content that uses a combination of different content forms. This contrasts with media that use only rudimentary computer displays such as text-only or traditional forms of printed or hand-produced material. Multimedia includes a combination of text, audio, still images, animation, video, and interactivity content forms.

SUMMARY ICT in general context includes a broad range of digital technology mostly of electronic informationprocessing technologies. The utilization of ICT in general context comprises the use of computer and programs such as word processing, spreadsheets, database software, hypertext, hypermedia, and multimedia.
