Basic Structure of an Introduction Purpose: An introduction paragraph “introduces” your reader to the topic and main points (thesis) of your essay. 1. “Hook” – Capture reader interest: use one of the following “attention grabbers”: surprising or important facts, information or statistics a quotation from someone relevant (Cesar Chavez, Ms. Wilson, etc. ) a story or example situation (or anecdote) DO NOT USE A QUESTION: (rephrase as a statement) “Did you know. . . ” 2. “Bridge” – Connect/transition the reader from the “Hook” to the Thesis: use one example or explore one fact ease the reader into the essay avoid going too in depth, or giving too many details too early 3. Last sentences: Thesis Statement + Essay Map: your topic + your ideas about the topic = expository thesis statement essay map: it can be part of your thesis or a separate sentence after your thesis, but it must be included in the introduction.

Sample Introduction Paragraph In a country founded on principles of freedom and acceptance, far too many racial and religious groups in the United State have been the victims of oppression and intolerance. While these groups’ situations were uniquely challenging, there are universal lessons to learn from their struggles. An examination of two of these groups, Arab. Americans and Mexican-Americans, showed that they suffered different forms of discrimination for varying reasons, and suggested that the non-violent approach they both used to gain their civil rights could benefit all oppressed people.
