Learning Target • I can write a conclusion paragraph that sums up my essay and pushes the reader to a greater understanding of the topic.
Essential Question What should the final paragraph of my essay accomplish?
Purpose of a Conclusion Paragraph Purpose: A concluding paragraph closes or ends an essay. It ties all the main points together and delivers the overall impact or “so what” of the entire essay. The conclusion allows you to: • have the last word on the issues you have raised in your paper, • summarize your thoughts, • show the importance of your ideas, and • push your reader to a new view/understanding of the subject.
Include in your conclusion paragraph: Sentence 1: Transition sentence • A transition sentence connects the body paragraph before it with this paragraph. Sentence 2: Re-Thesis • Restate or remind the reader of your thesis statement • Now that you have developed the main points of your thesis statement in the body paragraphs, remind the reader of the “big picture” or thesis statement of your essay again.
Include in your conclusion paragraph: Sentence 3: Re-Hook • Refer to the introductory paragraph “attention getters” by using key words or parallel/similar concepts and ideas. Sentence 4: Relationships • Show the points you made in your body paragraphs relate to each other. • Show the evidence/support you used work together to support your thesis.
Include in your conclusion paragraph: Sentence 5: Push the reader • Push your reader to a new view or understanding about the essay topic • Point to broader ideas, concepts, or implications of your essay topic • The last few sentences of your conclusion should also offer the reader the final weight or impact idea of your overall essay. • It should answer “so what? ” or “why does this matter? ” about the topic for your reader. • Show the importance of your ideas. • Use complex, evaluative ideas to connect your essay to the real world. • Have a universal message that relates your essay to many/most people
Sample Conclusion Paragraph (2009 -2010) Thesis Statement: Arab-Americans and Mexican-Americans experienced different forms of discrimination for varying reasons, but the non-violent approach they both used to gain their civil rights could benefit all oppressed people. Conclusion Paragraph: While both Arab-Americans and Mexican-Americans battled ignorance and narrow-mindedness, the reasons behind their discrimination and the exact forms it took were quite different. Despite those differences, both groups chose non-violent paths to win the support of their fellow Americans. The lessons learned by these two groups can benefit all those who are oppressed or taken advantage of by the powerful. Remaining peaceful in the face of aggression and hatred is never easy, but non-violence is the key to securing equal rights and fair treatment for all people.
