Introduction to Engineering Design Puzzle Cube Project
Puzzle Objectives: • Design a puzzle with 6 parts that fit together to make a cube (3 blocks wide, deep, and tall) • You will use ¾” wooden cubes to create your puzzle • Once completed, the cubes will be glued together to make six different parts • Each part must consist of 3 -6 blocks • No two parts can be identical
Project Requirements: • Part Combination Activity 40 pts • Stacked cube drawings 40 pts • Prototype 50 pts
Part Combination activity – 40 pts • You will need Isometric Grid Paper – Each wooden block will be one block on the grid paper • Come up with the following: – – 2 solutions for 3 blocks 5 solutions for 4 blocks 6 solutions for 5 blocks 7 solutions for 6 blocks
Sample Part Combination Activity
Stacked Cube Drawing: 40 pts • Select parts to make up your puzzle – You need 6 different parts – Each part must be between 3 and 6 blocks • Continue with this method until you have six parts and all blocks in the stacked cube are assigned a color • Be sure not to duplicate a part!
Prototype – 50 pts • Now make each part. • You will need wood glue. – Cover the entire surface - lightly. – You cannot stain wood glue, so be sure to wipe off any that seeps out…. or just use less glue (duh) • Be sure to align the wood “grain” correctly. Correct Incorrect
Prototype – 50 pts • Once your parts are made, sand lightly with a 220 grit piece of sandpaper. • You must have a finish: – Stain – “tint” – various colors – or Clear coat
Inventor Software • You will now create all of your parts in Inventor. – – IPT (Inventor Part) file 30 pts (5 pts/each) IAM (Inventor Assembly) file 30 pts IPN (Inventor Presentation) file 10 pts IDW (Inventor Drawing) - dimensioned 60 pts • You will color your parts to match the stacked cube drawing.
