Introduction to DTM

Global Training Definition of DTM 2017 The Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) is a system to capture and monitor displacement and population movements. It was designed to capture, process and disseminate information regularly and systematically to provide a better understanding of the movements and evolving needs of mobile populations in places of displacement or transit. 2

Mobility Tracking • Objective: To derive quantitative estimates of the presence of a population category or categories in a defined area to support advocacy and inform operational planning and response. • Context: Implemented in contexts with full or limited access and Can be repeated at a set frequency (monthly, bi- monthly, weekly, daily) to capture mobility dynamics over time and refine accuracy or precision of data. • Tools: Baseline area assessments; Baseline location assessments; Site assessments; Emergency tracking • Methods: Key informant interviews, direct observation, focus group discussions

Flow Monitoring • Objective: To derive quantitative estimates of the flow of individuals through a defined location, and to collect qualitative information about populations on the move. • Context: Implemented in contexts with full or limited access. Flow monitoring registry should be implemented as often as possible (preferably 7 days a week and 24 hours a day) to ensure accuracy of the data collected. • Tools: Baseline: assessment for flow monitoring (country level); Baseline assessment of flow monitoring points (local level); Flow monitoring registry • Methods: Key informant interviews, household or individual interviews, participatory mapping, direct observation

Registration • Objective: To derive census-like data on a population category using defined criteria for the population of concern, to inform operational response. • Context: Implemented in contexts with full access. To be conducted upon the request of the government and/or humanitarian community for a specific purpose. • Tools: Household registration; Individual registration • Methods: Household interview; Individual interview

Survey • Objective: To derive quantitative estimates (i. e. number, rate or proportion) of parameters representative of a population category, or to provide qualitative information on a population category. • Context: Target population for survey is known from credible secondary data sources. Access allows for sampling. • Tools: Multiple tools depending on the information objective, broadly grouped under the following categories: Social and demographic surveys; Thematic surveys; Migration flow surveys • Methods: Household survey: Individual survey
