BASKETBALL RULES l Each team has 5 players on the court at a time with substitutes waiting on the bench. l The object of the game is to shoot the ball through the basket and outscore the opposing team. Goals can be worth 1, 2, or 3 points. l Basketball is a non-contact sport so opposing players must defend their basket without making contact with an opposition player. Defenders must steal the ball or pressure opponents into missing their field goal attempt so as to rebound the ball and gain possession.
SCORER FROM EACH TEAM SCORER A Completes the scoresheet / runs the electronic scoring system – This provides the official score. SCORER B Operates the overhead score board WORK TOGETHER! – help each other!
AS SCORER You only need to record: l. Fouls l. Points scored l. Time outs.
REFEREE SIGNALS Signal goals and fouls to the scoring bench. Good idea to tell referees that you are new and can they signal and call out clearly.
SCORING POINTS 2 Normal field goals 3 Shot from outside the 3 point line 1 Penalty shot from free throw line

PERSONAL & TEAM FOULS Each player is allowed 5 personal fouls per game (make sure to notify the coach when a player nears 5 fouls) Each team is allowed 8 fouls each half without penalty. (Notify the refs on the 8 th foul) After 8 team fouls per team, penalty shots are taken by the opposition after every consecutive foul.
Referee Signals Commonly Used
SIGNALLING SINGLET NUMBERS l. Numbers between 4 & 15: referees can use 2 hands. After 20, only the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 can be used. The referee only uses one hand to signal these numbers. The highest number is 55. l

OPERATING THE OVERHEAD SCOREBOARD
Operating the overhead scoreboard Show l. Points scored l. Fouls l. Time Outs Normally the ref. starts the clock to begin game.
When operating the overhead scoreboard Last 2 minutes of the game, stop the clock when the referee blows the whistle ie: all violations and fouls. Start it when the ball touches a player on court. ARROW After the toss up at the start of game, point the arrow so the team that didn’t get the first full possession gets the next advantage.
