WELCOME TO SUSTAINABLE ENERGY www. utwente. nl/go/set TECHNOLOGY Jim Kok Programme Director
IN THIS PRESENTATION 1. Introduction 2. The SET curriculum 3. Second year 4. Career prospects 5. Admission 6. Pre-Master’s programme
1. INTRODUCTION THE GLOBAL ENERGY CHALLENGE
THE GLOBAL ENERGY CHALLENGE • Climate change • Security of energy supply • Sustainability and renewable resources ‘The three global energy challenges mentioned show the relevance of the master Sustainable Energy Technology. ‘
GLOBAL RENEWABLES-BASED POWER CAPACITY 100 % Current policy 80% G 100 % W EUROPEAN CO 2 EMISSION 70% 14 0 60% 12 0 50% 40% 60% 10 0 40% 80 20% 60 10% 20% 0%1990 2040 2000 2050 2010 2020 2030 0% 40 2002 2004 20 2012 2014 30% 2006 2008 Other renewables Hydro Wind Solar PV Share of total additions (right axis) 2010 ‘The presented graphs report on the global energy challenges, that are mentioned in the previous slide. On the left, European CO 2 emissions are assigned to different sectors. On the right, the global renewables -based power capacity is assigned to different renewable energy sources. Showing both an increasing addition of renewables over time and a mix of different renewable energy sources. ’ https: //www. electricitymap. org/? page=map&solar=false&remote=true&wind=false
2. THE MSc SET CONTENT OF THE SET CURRICULUM
WHY CHOOSE THE MSC IN SUSTAINABLE ENERGY TECHNOLOGY? “To become a member of a new generation of engineers that will lead the renewable energy revolution” “You will become the expert to respond to the global energy challenge”
Elective part: 1 -2 wild cards to replace courses for individual choice if courses overlap with COURSES SEPARATED INTO 4 THEMES (15 EC each theme & 5 EC each individual course) bachelor knowledge THEME 2: THEME 4: THEME 3: THEME 1: TECHNOLOGY & DESIGN & SYSTEM SOCIO-ECONOMICS ENERGY SOURCES INTEGRATION SUSTAINABILITY THE FIRST YEAR OF THE SET CURRICULUM • Energy, Sustainability • Electrical Power & Society Engineering & System • Energy Conversion • Energy from Biomass • System Innovation & Integration Technology • Solar Energy Strategic Niche • Basics for Process • Energy Storage • Wind Energy Management Simulation • Life-Cycle Strategy • Designing Business • Thermodynamics and Models Flowsheeting ‘This schematic overview shows the mandatory SET curriculum of the first year. All courses are separated into 4 themes; Energy Sources, Technology & Sustainability, Socio-Economics and Design & System Integration. Every theme consists of 3 courses, that all cover 5 EC each. More information on the content of the courses can be found on the website. ’ https: //www. utwente. nl/en/set/master_programme/study-programme/#first-year
THE FIRST YEAR CURRICULUM PER QUARTER Inflow possible at start Q 1 or Q 3 & ** Not for Pre. Master students Q 4: (15 EC) Q 1: (15 EC) Q 2: (15 EC) Q 3: (15 EC) Energy Conversion Technology. ** Thermodynamics and Flowsheeting Energy, Sustainability & Society Wind Energy Designing Business Models Energy from Biomass Solar Energy System Innovation & Strategic Niche Management Basics for Process Simulation Electrical Power Engineering & System Integration Energy Storage Life-Cycle Strategy ‘This scheme shows the scheduled courses of the first year. Every quartile (period) consists of 3 courses and themes mentioned in the previous slide and are spread out over the year. It is possible to start with the master programme in September (Q 1) and February (Q 3). The first year gives you very broad knowledge, which you will deepen during your second year’
3. SECOND YEAR Spezialization in Master thesis topic
SUSTAINABLE ENERGY TECHNOLOGY Second year AFFILIATION WITH A UT RESEARCH GROUP E. G. § § WIND SOLAR THERMAL ELECTRICAL INTERNSHIP (15 EC) at a Dutch or internationally based company OR PRE-ASSIGNMENT STUDY COURSES (15 EC) MASTER ASSIGNMENT Choice of 3 courses in preparation for the master assignment Thesis project in subject of choice (30 EC) SPECIALIZATION COURSES (HBO ‘The second year of SET is focussed on specialization within the field of sustainable energy graduates) technology. This consists of an internship at a Dutch or internationally based company of 15 EC. HBO graduates can use this for specialization courses, since they already have internship experience. Subsequently, pre-assignment study courses are chosen in preparation for the master assignment. This is in consultation with the chosen research group for the master assignment, to prepare in depth for your master assignment of 30 EC which is executed lastly. ’
SET: A 4 TU MASTER This means… • SET Master enrolment at the UT • Automatic secondary enrolment at TUD and TU/e • 1 st year of SET: curriculum at the UT ‘Sustainable Energy Technology is a 4 TU master. This means that an enrolment of the SET master at the University of Twente automatically enrols you at the Technical University of Delft and the Technical University of Eindhoven. Giving you the opportunity to follow elective courses at those universities in the second year of SET, resulting in more interesting courses to choose from in total. More information can • 2 nd year of SET: 3 elective courses at any of the 4 TU universities
