Introduction • The leading cause of death in the United States today is coronary heart disease, killing about half a million people each year. You yourself probably know someone close to you who has heart disease, diabetes or maybe is obese. In class we have discussed various risk factors and circumstances that negatively affect health such as stress, heredity, poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle. • It is time to take our knowledge and skills one step further to address these issues and design a plan to meet each aspect head on. The underlying fact is that we all have the power to prevent the decline of our health and increase not just our lifespan, but the amount of time that we can have fun and enjoy ourselves. Task • You have a job to do! You will be a part of a wellness team that must design a comprehensive wellness plan for one of the individuals described on the following page. You are tailoring your plan specifically to their needs, habits and lifestyle. The roles that must be filled are dietitian, life coach/recreation director and personal trainer. • You are focusing on achieving total well-being for your client and must take into consideration physical, mental and social health. You will research your areas of expertise and create a plan that will be pitched to your client. Next
Task • Meet The Clients… – Anthony is 21 years old, 6’ 2’’, 240 lbs. in college and has put on 25 pounds since graduating from high school. He loves sports but also loves to eat. – Serena is 15 years old, 5’ 5’’, 125 lbs. and is not interested in gym class or intense physical activity. She wants to get toned and in-shape however, and can handle eating a reasonable diet. – Ronald is 16 years old, 5’ 10’’, 130 lbs. and is ready to start working out. Swin wants exercises and workouts that will improve her performance and also help her to prevent injuries. • Laila is a 25 year old woman that likes to kick booty! She is 5’ 10 166 lbs. She is a boxing champ and needs a new strength and conditioning coach to get her in shape for her next big fight. She’s a feisty girl that needs a tough workout. Next

Process: The Roles Dietitian • As a food and nutrition expert, it is your job to analyze your client’s lifestyle and eating habits and to design a meal plan that features healthy food choices. • You must create a plan for two day’s worth of meals including snacks (3 meals / 2 snacks) • You must have the ingredients, nutrition facts, and brief preparation / cooking instructions. Process: The Roles Personal Trainer • The responsibility of the trainer is to create a fitness plan for the client that encompasses all five components of fitness: flexibility, muscular endurance, muscular strength, cardiovascular endurance, and body composition. • You must take into consideration the client’s lifestyle and taste, and design a detailed workout plan for a one week period. • You must be able to demonstrate several exercises and lifts when you present your plan to your client. Process: The Roles Life Coach / Recreation Director • You generally are filling two roles: you must help your client conquer issues relating to stress and work as well as plan alternative activities that will allow the client to be active, relieve stress, and have an enjoyable time. • A large part of your work is locating REAL resources for your client, i. e. a therapist, masseuse, parks, resorts, fitness classes, etc. • For your demonstration you will present your plan in two parts and display information on local facilities that may benefit your client. It includes the process or notetaking, the writing mechanics, demonstration, content, layout, teamwork, Power. Point presentation and various aspects including font, readability, and graphics. • The rubric is located in the web quest as well as provided to students in a handout to ensure their knowledge and understanding of what is expected. The evaluation matches the main areas of focus that students must master for this project. • By looking at a project previously turned in, the teacher can show students areas of concern and strengths so that they have a better understanding of the expectations and evaluation of the final product.
