INTRODUCTION : Ferrous sulfate has formula (Fe SO 4. H 2 O) and (M. wt=278 gm/mol). Its hydrates compound , The blue-green heptahydrate is the most common form of this material. All iron sulfates dissolve in water to give the same aqua complex [Fe(H 2 O)6]2+, which has octahedral molecular geometry with paramagnetic properties. Iron (II) sulfate first loses its water of crystallization and the original green crystals are converted into a brown colored anhydrous solid and begin decomposition at about 680 °C.
2 Fe. SO 4 Fe 2 O 3 + SO 2 + SO 3 Ferrous sulfate is prepared by adding a slight excess of iron to dilute sulfuric acid. Fe + H 2 SO 4 Fe. SO 4 + H 2 While the commercially ferrous sulfate is obtained by exposing moist pyrites to air when slow oxidation takes place. 2 Fe. S 2 + 7 O 2 + 2 H 2 O 2 Fe. SO 4 + 2 H 2 SO 4
Physical properties 1 - It is odorless , bluish green crystalline. 2 - It is soluble in water and alcohol. 3 - It is stored in tightly. 4 - Aqueous solutions are oxidized slowly by air when cold but rapidly when it is hot
Chemical properties 1 - Light green crystals of ferrous sulfate loss water and turn brown when heating. Fe. SO 4. 7 H 2 O Fe SO 4 + 7 H 2 O 2 -On high heating decomposes into ferric oxide, sulfur dioxide and sulfur trioxide. 2 Fe. SO 4 Fe 2 O 3 + SO 2 + SO 3 3 - Ferrous sulfate is a reducing agent 4 -Reaction between ferrous sulfate and Nitric oxide forms black- colored nitroso ferrous sulfate (Fe. SO 4. NO). ous sulfate react with ammonium sulfate it form ferrous am monium sulfate salt. Fe. SO 4 + (NH 4)2 SO 4 Fe. SO 4. (NH 4)2 SO 4. 6 H 2 O Mohr, s salt
Pharmaceutical application 1 - Iron forms act as an important compound of hemoglobin which act as carrier of oxygen in blood. 2 -The iron is necessary for growing Children and pregnant woman. 3 - Uses for anemia treatment (iron deficiency).
Chemical principle Ferrous sulfate is reducing agent which is titration against standard oxidizing agent solution (KMn. O 4) in acidic medium. 10 Fe. SO 4+2 KMn. O 4+8 H 2 SO 4 5 Fe 2(SO 4)3+2 Mn. SO 4+K 2 SO 4+ 8 H 2 O
Procedure: 1 - Take 5 ml from iron solution (unknown) , Add 7 ml from 2 N sulfuric acid. 2 - Titrate with potassium permanganate , until the color change to pink color.
Calculation : 1 - Calculate the normality of ferrous sulfate solution. 2 - Calculate the quantity of ferrous sulfate in your sample.
