1. WHAT IS AN ATTRACTION
Gunn (1994) describes them as constituting ‘the most powerful component on the supply of tourism…the energising power unit of tourism system’ (p 57) A Place? An Object? A Person? An Athmosphere? A Food? A Destination? An Event? ” 5
WHAT IS AN ATTRACTION ◉ “ A tourist system comprising three elements : ü a tourist or human element ü a nucleus or central element and ü a marker or informative element A Tourist attraction comes into existence when the three elements are connected” (Leiper, 1990). 6
According to Pierce (1991) “A Tourist attraction is a named site with specific Human or Natural feature which is the focus of visitor and management attention” 7
According to Swarbrook (2002) “Attractions are generally single units, based on a single key feature…. Destination are larger areas that include a number of individual. attractions” 8
A TYPOLOGY OF ATTRACTION There are various ways to classify Attraction, Swabrook (2002, p. 5) identifies 4 main types : b. Human – made buildings , structures, and a. Features within the sites that natural environment were design for a purpose other than attracting visitor, such as a religious worship, but which now attract substantial numbers of visitor who use them as leisure amenities. . 9 c. Human-made building, structure, and sites that are designed to attract visitors and are purpose-build to accommodate their needs, such as theme park. d. Special Event.
Inskeep (1991) identifies a three – point typology : a. Natural Attraction (based on features of the natural environment) b. Cultural Attraction (based on man’s activity). c. Special types of attraction that are officialy created. 10
