*Invertebrates are animals that do not have backbones. *There are 8 phyla of invertebrates. *Invertebrates live all over the world. Some live in the ocean. Others live in lakes and streams. *Many live on land some may live in you. *
* Sponges live in the ocean * They are attached to the bottom and cannot move around. * They have sac-like bodies with their mouth at the top. *
* Most cnidarians live in the ocean but some live in fresh water. * They have tentacles with stinging cells to catch their prey. * Their mouth is in the middle of the tentacles. * Examples are jellyfish and sea anemone. *
* Flatworms live in water, too. * They have long, flat, ribbonlike bodies. * Some are free living while others are parasites. * A parasite is an organism that lives inside another organism. * Examples are a planarian and a tapeworm. *
* Most roundworms are parasitic. * They get their food from living inside another organism and eating its food or tissues. * Examples are hookworms and heart worms. *
* Segmented worms have long tube-like bodies that is divided into segments (sections). * They have a simple brain and 5 hearts. * Most live in the ground. * Examples are earthworms and leeches. *
* Mollusks have soft bodies but many have shells. * Most live in the ocean but some live in freshwater and on land. * Examples are the snail, clam, octopus and squid *
* Echinoderm means spiny skin. * All live in the ocean. * They have an internal skeleton made of the spines. * Examples are sea stars and feather stars. *
* Arthropod means jointed feet. * They all have a hard outer covering called an exoskeleton. * They have segmented bodies. * Live on land in the water. * Examples are spiders, grasshoppers and butterflies. *
