Engineering Design Process

We’re focusing on the first three today.

#1) Identify the problem �What are we doing? Why are we doing it?

#1) Identify the problem � Mr. Burton wants you guys to design an awesome functioning paper airplane that can fly farther than anybody else. And looks aesthetically pleasing. � Aesthetic � We’re = Looks Good going to put all that disruptive energy to a constructive use.

#2) Identify Criteria / Identify Constraints Criteria = What solving the problem entails. What does functioning airplane entail? -Fly for a period of time, (not just take off then plop on the ground) -Fly controlled (aerobatics) -Look Good (Not garbage) Who’s airplane can fly the furthest?

#2) Identify Criteria / Identify Constraints Our only constraint for this project is that we have limited materials.

2) Identify Criteria and Constraints �Why might it be important to identify constraints/criteria? ◦ Gives us specific goals to reach ◦ Gives us a framework we must work around ◦ Makes sure our solution will meet the needs of our customers

3) Brainstorm Possible Solutions �Research is an important part of the engineering process because it: ◦ Tells us about previous solutions (if available) ◦ Gives deeper insight into our constraints/criteria ◦ Prepares us for analysis of our ideas

3) Brainstorm Possible Solutions Brainstorming is thinking and research! In brainstorming, anything is permitted. The more ideas brought up allow for more creativity! Brainstorming should provide a list of the BIG PICTURE solutions which can be analyzed more thoroughly (Step 4 -5)

� You already have your problem and your criteria and constraints … now you guys will be brainstorming. � Work together in groups to research and come up with what makes a good paper airplane. me 10 to three. � Give � Follow � You’re sketches on paper, narrow it down the worksheet I give you. Turn it in for a grade. free to build prototypes after completing your worksheet, but please clean up after yourselves.
