DTP Software The operating system runs your computer, software programs make the computer productive. Microsoft Word: low-end, for simple projects Microsoft Publisher: mid-range, useful for beginners with limited skills Adobe In-Design: high-end, advanced features, professional printing Quark. XPress: high-end, advanced DTP work Adobe Acrobat: not a true DPT program, converts any document to a PDF file for free Macromedia Flash. Paper: like Adobe Acrobat, but uses Flash Player to convert documents
Input & Output Devices Input: keyboard, mouse, scanner, drawing tablet, microphone Output: printer, monitor, speakers
Printers Dot Matrix- first printer attached to personal computers. Created a series of dots that formed the letters. Slow, noisy, low-quality Laser Printer- prints similar to a copy machine. Inkjet- less expensive than a laser, quiet, fast
Networks Computers within an organization are connectable. Like the school’s network, a file on one person’s computer can be accessed on another computer or by someone else. LAN: Local Area Network- connects computers in a single building or within a single organization WAN: Wide Area Network- connects computers over a large geographical area. ◦ Ex: the Internet, VPN (virtual private network) connects all computers in a single organization and blocks access to others.
Viruses Destructive programs (called malware) such as computer viruses, worms, Trojans, adware, or spyware can invade a computer. Invasion occurs through e-mails, attachments, or visiting a website Antivirus software protects against malware, but must be updated often.
DTP & Permissions
Permissions Business world: Any art work or written content belongs to the author/creator. Must get permission (often a fee) to use the material. Education world: “Fair Use” rules grants students permission to use materials on a limited basis as part of the learning process.
Royalty-Free Images A “royalty” is a fee paid to an artist every time you use his or her art work. Some images are “Royalty-Free” (free all the time, or free use with a one-time fee) ◦ Some requires the source must be named, others do not require a source, but do not allow resale
Copyright Laws that protect those who produce a work whether it is art or text. No copyright symbol need be visible for the protection to exist
Licensing One way that someone with a copyright can provide permission for use. ◦ Can use the work, but do not own it ◦ Ex: When you get a new software program such as In. Design, you get a license to use the software, not own it. The installation CD is the permission.
Is it a Patent, Trademark, or Copyright? Patent: provides “the right to exclude others from making, using, selling, or importing” an invention. Patent is good for 20 years. Trademark: Word, name, symbol to distinguish goods from others. Ex: Nike Swoosh Copyright: Protects “literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works. ” The other has exclusive rights to reproduce, distribute, perform, or display
