Intrinsic Motivation The driving force behind success
Forms of Motivation is the drive behind an action Form 1: Biological drives (hunger, thirst, sex)an internal drive Form 2: Rewards and Punishments an external drive or extrinsic Form 3: The reward of the engagement in a taskan internal drive or intrinsic Pink, Daniel H. Intrinsic Motivation Research Henry Harlow coined the term when in 1949 when he discovered the drive with rhesus monkeys. Findings were so controversial that he did not continue research efforts in this area. Edward Deci replicated the findings with humans in 1969 Pink, Daniel H. Research says… Intrinsic motivation sustains interest and effort in an activity. When extrinsic rewards are offered for an activity there is a short “burst” of increased effort, but then interest to sustain the activity significantly decreases Extrinsic rewards have been found to decrease task performance (tasks are done more poorly) Pink, Daniel H. (2009) The surprising truth about what motivates us. New York, New York. Riverhead Books.
Research says… Extrinsic rewards decrease altruistic behaviors Extrinsic rewards encourage unethical behaviors Extrinsic rewards can create addictions Extrinsic rewards can lead individuals to focus on only short term gains Pink, Daniel H. Three Forms of Intrinsic Motivation Daniel Pink (2009) describes three essential forms of intrinsic motivation: › Autonomy › Mastery › Purpose
Forms of Intrinsic Motivation Autonomy › Being self directed and able to make decisions about when, where, how, and with whom your job tasks are performed › Strategies: Ask teachers for suggestions on how to give them the autonomy they desire Provide sacred time in their day that they are free to structure Do not micromanage their style if they are producing the desired results
Forms of Intrinsic Motivation Mastery › The continuous improvement of skills › Strategies: Grow a growth mindset in staff Provide tasks that balance of challenge that is within their ability level, and provide necessary resources to succeed Use employee generated goals and objectives
Forms of Intrinsic Motivation Purpose › A person’s job must have meaning beyond themselves › Strategies: Verbalize to staff how smaller tasks relate to the “big picture” Provide regular positive feedback on the value of the work Create a system of peer to peer “now that” rewards which highlight the value of the work
