In-Text Parenthetical Citations and Works Cited Pages Made Simple? Disclaimer: This is my attempt to put it in “plain English” for you. If this contradicts or Confuses anything your LA teacher Says about your paper, you should Use HIM/HER as your best source!

Why do you need to cite your sources? • To give credit where credit

Why do you need to cite your sources? • To give credit where credit is due • To avoid plagiarizing • To credit whatever you quote (write down) from the source. (Doesn’t have to be literally a“quote”, like looking up a google quote) • To avoid failing • To avoid being fired? It’s the right thing to do!

IN HS: The difference between a Works Cited Page and a Bibliography • A Works Cited page is a list of sources cited in your paper (in-text parenthetical citation) • If it is not cited in your paper it should not be on your Works Cited page • A Bibliography is a list of all the sources you used to do your research- whether they are cited in your paper or not For NOW: If you used the info on a note card, even if it didn’t make the final cut, you might cite it.

Your “Works Cited” really has two parts: 1. The quote you use in the

(“Federal Court”). • The very first thing listed in your citation is what is included in your parenthetical citation • Author is the first thing you would cite, if there is no author…title is next • Since a title is “quoted” in your citation, it is “quoted” in your parenthetical citation as well • The period goes outside the parenthesis!!!!!!

Page Numbers in “In-text PC” • When citing the internet you rarely have page numbers…therefore they will not be part of your parenthetical citation • However, when citing a book you must include the page number in the citation

Tips • • It’s Works Cited not Work Cited, not Work Citied, not Works Sited) Don’t forget to hang the indent…and double space You Cannot use wikipedia Put citations in ABC order by the first item listed. • No Author, but long Title? No need to write the whole title out for the in-text parenthetical…just include enough so that the reader knows to which source you are referring. (“Activists”).
