Interviewing Skills By: Owen Weaver
Overview • When interviewing for a job, there a lot of important aspects that everyone should acknowledge and that are equally important. Knowing that you are going for an interview can be very stressful. Things that will help you, and that I will explain in detail include researching the company, interview attire, checklist of items to bring, asking the right questions, and practicing answering questions.
Correct Researching Abilities • Do not worry if you cannot find the answer to every problem, print it out, take notes as you research, and take it with you to your interview. Consider Linkden if you cannot find anything about the business at all. If you are a student in school, include visiting your college’s career office. Lastly a good tip is to drive to the interview location beforehand. Preferably at the same time of day as your interview. So you can get a good estimate of how long the travel time will be on the day of your interview. You definitely do not want to be late to a very important interview.
Attire you should wear to an interview • Proper attire in an interview is crucial. Sometimes people can base people personality based on what they are wearing. One of the first things an interviewer will see of you is how you're dressed. A good outfit is usually formal, so definitely do not wear jeans, sneakers, or a Tshirt. Unless you are told to do so. The business suit should usually be comfortable and set for men and women. Make sure the attire fits well, does not look worn, and is quite comfortable when you sit down. Both men and women should avoid wearing any clothes that are too tight. Wear dark, neutral colors, and of course stay groomed. Correct business and interview attire is a very important aspect to making a good first impression.
What To Bring to an Interview • • • Bring: A nice positive attitude Notes Your resume Your own list of questions A pen and a notepad Portfolio Personal grooming items Cash Your planning calendar DO NOT Bring: • Your Cell Phone • Contents in your pocket like coins, keys, etc… you do not want clanging things In your pocket during an interview • Your family, friends, or pets • Your own food or drink
Practicing Answering Questions • Answering questions is very important because during an interview, you do not want to choke up on your own words. You have to be confident. The largest portion of your interview will be spent answering questions, the best way to prepare for an interview is to anticipate the questions you'll likely be asked and then practice your answers to these questions. There always common interview questions that every business will usually ask which are like, career goals, level of interest, communication skills, motivation, or even what do you do for the community. You have to anticipate these questions because they will mostly always be asked. You can practice on a mirror or with a friend.
The Star Method for Answering Questions • S-Situation: Define the situation and know it • T-Task: Know the task so that you can answer it • A-Action: Action is usually when the question is being asked • R-Result: You answer the question with confidence
Lastly, Prepare your own questions to ask • An interview is as much for you as it is for the hiring manager. It is your chance to find out more about the job, the company, the industry, and your potential boss. Your questions should show your genuine interest in or understanding of the company.
