Interview vs. Survey Nyeema Lee
Interview
Research Question What form of media makes you feel at peace? (Social media, Print, Blogging, Youtube, etc. )?
Background and Purpose Mental health and your overall sanity is as important, if not more, than your physical. With social media seemingly at its peak, I wonder if people understand how to make sure they are healthy, and that if they aren’t, to know social media isn’t always the cure.
Questions & Top Answers:
What is peace to you? A clean space to kick my feet up, to be as loud or silent as I wish to be all while listening to music that translates my feelings
What makes you feel peaceful outside of media? Music, reading, playing basketball
What is stress to you? Stress to me is feeling overwhelmed anxious
How did you learn to cope with the feeling of stress? Smoked weed first, but now I mostly reflect on the now and what I can do to determine and control my life’s events
Have you tried multiple forms of media to relieve stress? Which ones? Porn, Instagram, Netflix, Facebook
When maintaining your peace, do you stay away from a form of media? Why? When I’m trying to maintain my peace I eliminate all forms of media. . I take a hiatus for as long as I need to and that helps me a lot
What do you typically use your media outlets for? I use social media to keep in touch with people and to find out what is happening in the world, especially in my home country
Can you tell me a specific stressful event linked to a form of media? Seeing black people brutally shot or killed in videos
Can you tell me a specific peaceful event linked to a form of media? Sometimes I make my husband watch Vogue makeup tutorials on Youtube with me at night. It’s really fun and helps us bond about things he may not naturally know I’m interested in. He’s learned a lot too. We laugh and have fun and it feels good sharing my interests with him
Can you remember your mental state before you knew of your favorite media outlet? If so, how was it? I don’t remember actually which I wish I could but if I had to take a guess on it, It would probably be a more peaceful and productive mental state. I used to read a lot of books and just spend my time wisely in general before I identified with my favorite media outlet. That’s why I take hiatuses because I have to remind myself to use my time wisely and to apply myself with things that aren’t virtual.
Compare/Contrast Responses The responses were all different. My interviewees aged from 19 -36, single to married. It was interesting to actually see people respond in a way where they’ve noticed toxicity coming from their interactions on social platforms. Also, many people have learned multiple ways to find peace for themselves outside of media.
Explain the experience. . This experience was fulfilling because I myself have had trouble finding peace within myself. No, media isn’t always bad, however, realizing that we were once functioning humans before technology is vital to keep human interaction alive.
Forthcoming? Or making it up? From a few of my younger interviewees I received vague and similar responses. The older, the more in depth the responses became, also because they remember a world before social media.
What to do differently Next time I would encourage my younger interviewees to dig deeper, also see what they’d like to discuss when it comes to these types of conversations.
Survey

Forthcoming or making up answers? I believe everyone was pretty forthcoming with their responses, and probably would have been more forthcoming if they had the opportunity to make their own responses.
What to do differently? The questions asked would be a lot more exact to what my purpose is.

Preferred Method
Interview vs. Survey I definitely prefer the Survey method, however, I should have understood my research question so my survey could have given me better results.
