Interview techniques By Charlie Kerby
welcome Hello, welcome to my video. I would like introduce you to this power point, taking you through everything you need to know about interviews. I will talk you through the techniques used by the interviewer to get to the heart of the topic at hand, even if the person being interviewed doesn’t want to talk about it. This can cause some spectacular results, most common amongst this is the guest walks out of the interview, but it can also include some very heated arguments. Also you can see celebrities or high profile people making fools out of themselves.
Topics. • • Question types Interview styling Communication skills Structuring
Question types • • • Open- a question likely to receive a longer answer. Closed- A closed question can be answered with either a single word or a short phrase. Single- A single question is a individual question with one main answer. Multiple- more then one question asked in one straight sentence. Direct- a blunt question aiming for a direct answer. Suggestive- often a statement which requires the interviewee to expand on.
Interview styling • hard news- Hard news is a serious style of interview as the interview will be factual. Hard news would be about things like: Politics, Crimes, Murders, knife crime etc. . . mainly current affairs. • light-hearted- A combative interview is considered as an aggressive style of interview towards the interviewee however the interviewer can come across as determined to get the information that is needed from the interviewee • Entertainment-focuses on the media and current affairs i. e. celebrities, to find out more about celebrities, etc. • Investigative-Investigative interviewing style is to try and find out information, it is a lot like hard news as they both have a political feel. This style tries to get as much information out of whoever the interviewee is as they can • Promotional- A promotional style interview will be used to promote something, usually a celebrity will only do an interview if they’re promoting something i. e. their latest film, new song
Structuring • • Introduction- meet & greet the interviewee Developmental questions- get the ball rolling Confidence building- make the interviewee feel comfortable Key questions- the hart of the interview Soundbites- short clips to break the interview up Summary- recap on all major points Windup- thank the interviewee and end the interview
Communication skills • building rapport- this is crucial, you need to be able to build rapport to enter the world of the interviewee, this way you should be able to connect easier • active listening- you must listen to your interviewee, in order to dissect what it is that they say a pull out information that may be useful into the interview. • body language- by reading the body language of the interviewee you will be able to sense how open they feel and wether you need to build their confidence further.
The Ali-g interview • Ali G was as inappropriate as always and provided a comical twist on some serious questions. Overall the interview raised money for charity as well as providing an insight into the lives of the couple. Ali-g starts the interview with an easy question; this is called a development question and builds the confidence of the interviewees because it is not difficult to answer.
He uses questions like “where did you two meet? ” and “what did you think of the spice girls? ” these are fairly normal questions and are great if you need to get the ball rolling. As I said earlier they caused the interviewees confidence. Almost all interviewers will use this technique and it is common practice through-out high profile interviews. You can also use less relevant questions which relate to a high point in the career of the person. This could be a question like “so, how did it feel when you scored the winning penalty goal”. This will immediately put the person in a good mood. They will relax, and become more likely to answer the more difficult questions later on.
The Piers Morgan interview My second interview is Piers Morgan and Kid Rock. In this video Kid rock is explaining why he has decided to reduce the cost of everything including tickets, food, beers and memorabilia. However as the interview goes on, without Kid Rock noticing Piers changes the subject from talking about kid rocks tour to the U. S. economy and the lack of action from Washington regarding the recession. Piers is good at this, changing the subject to something the interviewee was willing to talk about to something completely different.
The introduction is crucial. It lets the audience know who is being questioned, it is also the queue for the interviewee and makes them aware that there questioning is imminent, this is good because if you ask the first question when the person you’re interviewing is not ready then you could put them on edge and get the interview off on the wrong foot. This causes unnecessary discomfort.
Why The interview Is hard news and promotional. It also has a light-hearted aspect to it. The majority of questions asked were single, meaning one straight question. There was also suggestive. However all questions asked where very much open and required quite lengthy answers.
