Interview Tips The following are tips suggested by professionals who interview and hire people for a living. Take notes! notes
Interview Tips: • Be on time. For your exit interview, you will get an appointment slip. Leave your class 5 minutes early! For real-world interviews, be 15 minutes early. • Dress professionally! Suits, dress shoes, dress pants, shirts with collars. No tennis shoes, tee shirts, hoodies, jeans or flip flops.
Interview Tips: • Turn off your cell phone! Do not bring it out for any reason. • Don’t lie. • Don’t discuss religion, politics or anything too personal. • Don’t ask the interviewer any personal questions. • Don’t chew gum or fidget.
Interview Tips: • Don’t say anything negative about a previous employer or job no matter how justified you feel it is! • Don’t bring a back pack, over-sized purse, water bottle or drink with you. • Don’t ask about pay, vacations, bonuses or holidays until after you’ve been offered the job.
Interview Tips: • Be courteous and friendly to everyone…from the receptionist to the doorman to the interviewer (s). • When you are introduced to the interviewer, shake hands firmly, smile, make eye contact, introduce yourself and wait to be asked to be seated. • Sit up straight, continue to make eye contact and show interest in what is being said.
Interview Tips: • Be relaxed, confident and respectful. • Show enthusiasm for the job and the interview process. Don’t be distracted. • Keep your answers brief yet detailed. Answer the question thoroughly but don’t go on and on. • Don’t speak too quickly or slowly. If you need the question repeated or clarified, confidently ask the interviewer to do so.
Interview Tips: • At the end of the interview, thank the interviewer for the opportunity and for taking the time to meet with you. • Make it clear that you are interested in the job. Tell the interviewer that you would like to work with (not for) him/her and that you look forward to hearing from him/her. (Does not apply to exit interview. )
