Interventions Identifying and Implementing
An intervention is that “extra something” put in place that extends Beyond the regular curriculum AND Specifically targets identified weaknesses of a student or group of students.
Research-based interventions are strategies, teaching methodologies and supports that have been shown through one or more valid research studies to help a student improve academic, behavioral/emotional or functional skills. The interventions used prior to determining eligibility for special education and related services must be designed to address the skill deficiency of the particular individual student. North Carolina Department of Public Instruction
What is an RTI Intervention? o Instruction that supplements and intensifies classroom curriculum/instruction to meet student need n Academic or Behavioral n Standard Protocol or Individualized o All interventions must have data to support need, a plan of implementation, criteria for successful response, assessment to monitor progress. o All interventions must have an instructional component!
Intervention is… o additional, targeted, and intensive instruction provided to students who continue to struggle with learning despite conventional instruction. Foorman & Torgesen (2001)
Effective Interventions … o. Begin as soon as it is clear the student is lagging behind o. Increase the intensity of instruction and practice
Basic Guideline of Effective Interventions Intensive Provided on a frequent and consistent basis Utilize more vertical instruction, one skill at a time taught and practiced Use additional materials than core program to focus on specific skills Focus on areas of individual student weaknesses
Development of Intervention Plan o Based on data, identify interventions with highest likelihood of success o Intervention involves explicit instruction and progress monitoring o Intervention is NOT accommodations and modifications o Decision making for progress monitoring data n Roles, responsibilities, and timeline

Process 1. Teacher Identifies and begins tracking data for 3 weeks 2. Compile data. What is it telling you? Is the intervention working? n If it is, keep monitoring, increase frequency, increase intensity and duration. Submit SAT file to Principal for review. n If NOT working, either increase intensity, frequency and duration of initial intervention OR begin new intervention. Submit SAT file to Principal for review.
o 3. Principal will set up meeting with you to review the SAT.
