Stranger things and 80 s movies – connection? Stranger things is connected to and references a range of 80 s movies. For example, both feature groups of young children and teens as central characters; narratives revolve around aliens and supernatural beings; locations are based in “small town America” – white picket fences, mom and pop stores, quiet, safe inhabited and predominantly white and well off people. Stylistically, the TV show and the films are similar – many of the shots actually homage shots from famous 80 s movies. Other examples of typical characters from 80 s films: police chief, someone new in town, randy teens, teachers, shady government agents Examples of shared mise en scene: woods, 80 s costume, 80 s memorabilia The series mixes the genre of family sci-fi adventure with more grown up themes of horror – combining ideas from 80 s films with different target audiences
