INTERROGATIVE WORDS In French, we add interrogative word(s) before est-ce que to ask more specific questions such as what, when, where, how, etc.

INTERROGATIVE WORDS • A list of all the interrogative words to be known for chapter 2 can be found in the competence 3 vocabulary chart on page 101. • où = where que (qu’)= what • Pourquoi = why quand = when • qui/avec qui = who(m)/with whom • comment = how • quel(s) jour(s) = (on) what/which day(s) • à quelle heure = at what time

EXAMPLES OF INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES • Ex: 1) Où est-ce que vous aimez manger? = Where do you like to eat? • 2) Pourquoi est-ce que tu restes au lit? = Why are you staying in bed? • 3) À quelle heure est-ce qu’elles déjeunent? = (At) what time do they eat lunch? • 4) Qui est-ce que tu aimes? = Who do you like? • Note here that tu and not Qui is the subject of the sentence.

ASKING QUESTIONS USING INVERSION • Instead of using est-ce que to form a question, we can invert the subject pronoun and the conjugated verb. Add a hyphen between the inverted subject and verb. Do not invert the infinitive. • Ex: Est-ce que tu joues au hockey? AFTER INVERSION Joues-tu au hockey?
