Readiness for Internship • Program milestones that must be met before applying for internship • Pass comprehensive exam • Propose dissertation prior to internship ranking (in February) • Internship app process requires an investment in time, money, and energy • Is it realistic that you can apply this year? • Know program requirements for faculty to approve readiness • Sites favor applicants whose dissertations have at least been proposed • Consider whether you’ve acquired the experiences (type & amount) that will make you competitive for the sites you are applying to

Update Your Department File • • Practicum Hours Semester Summary NMSU Formatted AAPI Hours Summary Sheet Copy of any MA/MS hours (if applicable) Include a cover sheet summarizing: • Intervention Hours • Assessment • Supervision • Acquire signature(s) from MA/MS supervisor or director of training Course waivers Updated CV Be sure to claim NM resident status (if you haven’t already) Other paperwork

Defining Goals for Training • • • Consider your personal and professional priorities (life planning) Types of training opportunities you want to have on internship Experience you already have (intern/site match) Geographical location Types of site(s) that interest you • Do you have the experiences to make you a competitive applicant for the sites you are interested in?

Researching and Selecting Sites • APA-accredited vs. non-APA accredited sites • Depends on future goals • Directory accessible from APPIC website • Review info from directory • Check website of internship site for additional information, don’t simply rely on directory • Recommended that you apply to minimum 12, maximum 15 • Make a spreadsheet of sites applying to and the deadline for applications

Application Details • Request transcripts • Supplemental materials (e. g. , integrative report, case summary) No additional supplemental materials should be requested— violation of APPIC policy • Hours summary (online)—very extensive • Selection of references • People that know you and your work well • Ask if they can write you a strong letter • Ask if you can review the letter first • Essays (4) and cover letters (specific to each site)

Essays—General Tips • Guidance from faculty who are experienced with this process • For first draft, ignore length requirements (500 words) • Editing process with take care of length • Give your editors more to work with, not less (recommend a month’s time for editing) • Unwise to ignore the advice given by faculty on your essays • Be prepared for multiple edits • Don’t’ take it personally, it’s just part of the process

Autobiographical Essay • Share something personal that very few others could say about themselves • Focus on how you got to this point in your life and use specific experiences • Demonstrate self-awareness and focus on your values, life goals/vocational interests • Write about your development as a counseling psychologist • How have your interests evolved? • How did you first become interested in the process of behavior change, therapy, clinical research, etc.

Theoretical Orientation Essay • How your theory influences the way you assess, conceptualize and work with clients • Apply theory to a case. • You can use more than one case to make your points (integrative is okay) • Demonstrate application of theory • Use theory-based language to describe conceptualization and interventions

Diverse Populations Essay • In this essay you’re demonstrating experiences and application of knowledge regarding diverse populations. • Be as specific in describing the types of diversity you’ve received training in • Clients, trainers, research, teaching • Provide examples of how you use your MC training in conceptualization • Use specific multicultural constructs/terms • Use a case example • Think about how your experiences working with diverse populations have affected the way you conduct assessments…include these considerations in your essay.

Research Essay This essay demonstrates that you’re a scientist- practitioner. Discuss your research interests and how they began/evolved Research done that informs your practice Research questions that are of interest because of your counseling experience • Research you’ve consumed to better serve your clients and do other work • Emphasize if research has relevance to the sites applying to and how their training will help your professional development. • •

Cover Letters • Demonstrate goodness-of-fit between you and each site. • Start with the site you’re most interested in so that your enthusiasm will carry through to your last essay. • Be as specific as you possibly can in describing why each site is such a great fit. • Mention specific staff members, specific groups, specific seminars and rotations by the names used in their materials. • Discuss your internship goals and how these relate to your career goals • State your strengths while highlighting your training needs (or areas for future development).

Interviews • Coordination and cost • Phone Interviews vs In-person interviews • Search for travel deals • Practice in-person and phone interviews • Plan out what you want to say • Have a separate outline of notes for each site to practice and distinguish them from one another • Prepare at least 2 -3 case samples to highlight knowledge of your theory(ies), interventions, diverse populations etc. (consider goodness-of-fit with sites while doing so).
