Maps and ethics “The map is the perfect symbol of the state. ” “Maps can even make nuclear war appear survivable. ” “People trust maps, and intriguing maps attract the eye as well as connote authority. ” “Like guns and crosses, maps can be good or bad, depending on who’s holding them, who they’re aimed at, how they’re used, and why. ” “As display systems become more flexible, and more like video games, users must be wary that maps, however realistic, are merely representations, vulnerable to bias in both what they show and what they ignore. ”

Getting Our Terminology Straight n Internet Mapping? n Interactive Mapping? n Internet GIS? n Location Based Services?
What is GIS? n A geographic information system (GIS) integrates hardware, software, and data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. (GIS. com) n Is Internet Mapping GIS? n Andrew Turner’s Thoughts - the claim that a web map is GIS is similar to saying that a light switch is Electrical Engineering was used in the design and development of the house electrical system and grid. But in the end, the light switch has become a commodity. It’s a device anyone can grab off of a local hardware store shelf and install in their house.

Design
Digital Cartography • It’s own sub-discipline within Geography • Has its own set of principles • Several texts on the subject • Shares a lot of commonality with basic cartographic principles • Representation (map types, purpose, audience) • Visualization (hierarchy, color, symbology) • Interactive maps do add some complications From website of Steven Bassett
