Internet Centralized K-12 Homework Assignment Capability Introduction Abstract: Operating Environment: Current school systems require that when students are absent from school, they or their parents must come talk to each teacher to get missed work. A more simple standardized method for obtaining missed assignments can be created. This problem can be solved by building a web-based application with an underlying database. Teachers can post missed homework onto the website, and absent students or their parents can access this without leaving their homes. The final product will include a web interface, a database to store the assignment information, log files describing individual accesses to the system, and help documentation to assist teachers in updating the web page. This webbased application will standardize the way in which homework assignments will be available to absent students. Problem Statement: • Problem: – Absences cause missed assignments and handouts – Students fall behind • Solution: – Easy retrieval of missed assignments and handouts – Simple standardized method Expected End Product and Deliverables: • Web-based application – – – • Computer with Internet access • Any computer platform and any browser Intended Users: • K-12 students and parents • K-12 teachers and administrators Intended Uses: • Retrieval of assignments and handouts by students or parents • Posting of assignments, handouts, and announcements by teachers Assumptions: • Users have equivalent of 3 rd grade education level • Users have basic computer skills • Users’ computers have sufficient memory and Internet access Limitations: • Limited to software licensed by Iowa State University or open source • Web application must be easily understood by a 3 rd grade level user Acknowledgements: Senior Design Team Ongo-07 – A Statewide, Computer-Based Educational System Senior Design Team Ongo-08 – K-12 Teaching Application Support and Software Dr. Thomas Daniels, Assistant Professor Dr. Yong Guan, Assistant Professor Student/parent user interface Teacher user interface Database Log file User help documentation Project Requirements Proposed Approach Design Objectives: Proposed Approach: • Easy to use for a 3 rd grade level or above • Easy access to missed assignments • Prototype • Implementation • Testing Functional Requirements: • • Log in screen for authenticating user Password protection Unique interfaces for students and teachers Assignment list containing absent students’ names Technologies Considered: • Platform developed to maximize accessibility • Server supplied by Iowa State University • Software licensed by Iowa State University or open source Design Constraints: Testing Considerations: • User not allowed to log on from multiple machines simultaneously • Certain amount of memory will be allocated for each user • Database will need to be cleaned up periodically • • Milestones: Resources and Schedule • Web application • Help document • Testing Personnel Effort: Richard Michael Closure Patrick 180 hr Closing Summary: When a student misses class, it can be a challenge to retrieve the assignments from each individual teacher. The individual assignments must then be compiled into a single list. The proposed solution to this problem is to create a web page that will allow a student to print out a list of the assignments from all classes that were missed. The website must be developed to be easily understood and accessed. The teachers will be responsible for maintaining and updating their respective assignments.
