The Russian side included in the study a module examining the prevalence of tobacco use among the somatic patients Patients completed a specially designed self-reported questionnaire to determine the status of smoking. The interviewer asked about the patient's experience in using tobacco. § If the patient reported that he had never smoked / did not smoke, the questionnaire was not filled out further. § The fact of quitting smoking was recorded, and how long ago it happened (years). § If the patient was presently smoking, or stated that he/she quit smoking not more than two months ago, then a three-domain questionnaire was filled, gathering data on the number of cigarettes and years of smoking; Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence scores; motivation for quitting. 5
