The Russian side included in the study a module examining the prevalence of tobacco use among the somatic patients Patients completed a specially designed self-reported questionnaire to determine the status of smoking. The interviewer asked about the patient's experience in using tobacco. § If the patient reported that he had never smoked / did not smoke, the questionnaire was not filled out further. § The fact of quitting smoking was recorded, and how long ago it happened (years). § If the patient was presently smoking, or stated that he/she quit smoking not more than two months ago, then a three-domain questionnaire was filled, gathering data on the number of cigarettes and years of smoking; Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence scores; motivation for quitting. 5

Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence consists of 6 items and is internationnaly accepted screening tool • Fagerstrom test provides a continuous 0 -10 score, reflecting severity of smoking dependence. • For the purpose of the study the scores were divided into 4 zones, reflecting different dependence levels § § Low dependence (1 -2 score), Low to moderate dependence (3 -4 score), Moderate dependence (5 -7 score) High dependence (8 + score) степени зависимости 6

Data analysis • Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 25. 0, supplied by Predictive Solutions, the official supplier of IBM SPSS software products in Russia 7
