The Airport wind 18 • ILS equipped 09 • Runway 27 • 2000 meters • Non-precision approach 27 Ø Two Intersecting Runways Ø Peak traffic • Runway 36 Aircraft queued to land to take off • 3000 meters 36 Ø Weather Conditions • Moderate northerly winds • 1000’ Overcast • Visibility 2 miles in rain ILS 3
Emergency declared Ø The aircraft experienced several electrical failures 1 hour before landing Ø Emergency declared Ø QRH advises crew that anti-skid may not be available Ø After landing, the brakes catch fire, and the aircraft is unable to stop on available runway 4
The Accident Ø Aircraft exits the runway surface at approximately 90 knots Ø The left landing gear collapses, and the aircraft comes to a stop with the left wing resting on the ground, and the right wing in the air Ø This slanted condition of the aircraft renders most of the evacuation slides unusable Ø The right engine continues to run, despite the pilot’s efforts to secure the engine. Ø There are initial reports Ø of multiple injuries and possibly fatalities. 5
