Internal Migration in India internal migration is now recognized as an important factor in influencing social and economic development, especially in developing countries.
Indian Inhabitants • 540, 000 in Sikkim • 166. 2 million in Uttar Pradeh • In 2001 there were 309 million immigrants • 37% more immigrants from 2001 to 1991 • Mostly female immigrants
Intrastate Migrants • 90% of female migrants were intrastate, which means they stayed in their own state, the rest of them moved around • 79% of male migrants were intrastate • India has 28 states and 8 union territories
Reasons for Migration • During the decade of 1991 to 2001, 33 million males and 65 million females migrated • Seven groups: Employment, Business, Education, Marriage, Moved at Birth, Moved with Family and moved with others. • number one is employment
Migration Destinations • largest migration destination is Uttar Pradesh, totalling 41%. • Maharashtra, constituting 32% • Orissa alone, provided 34% of the total migrants going to these states • Majority of mgirants go to bordering states
Intrastate migrants destinations • 50% of intrastate migrants move to Maharashtra • 30% of migrants moved to Gujarat and Haryana • Only 20% of migrants didn’t go to one of these three places
