Internal & External Structures Variations for survival
VARIATIONS FOR SURVIVAL Internal and external structures in organisms have adaptations that allow for specific functions and species survival.
Fish: Did you know? Over half of all organisms with a backbone or spinal column (known as vertebrates) are fish. Fish vary in size, shape, color and appearance (from tiny gobies no bigger than your fingernail to whale sharks 18 meters in length!) They can live in varying environments from freezing arctic seas to warm, freshwater lakes. Some even spend a lot of time out of water!

Internal Structures: Gills Internal gills are one of the major structures that are characteristic to fish. Gills allow fish to bring in needed oxygen from the water and release carbon dioxide gas from their bodies. Comparative Anatomy: How are gills similar to our lungs?
STRANGE LOOKING FISH Although different in appearance, all of these fish have similar internal and external features for survival. What are some of those internal and external structures?
Birds: Did you know? Birds are the most diverse of all terrestrial (land) vertebrates. There are over 8, 600 species of birds. Birds are descendants of reptiles. Feathers are developed from reptile scales.

Internal Structures: Flight Skeleton The bones of birds are thin and hollow. Many bones in the bird skeleton are fused making it rigid and sturdy for flight. Comparative Anatomy: How are the bones of birds similar to our bones?
BIRD SPECIES Although different in appearance, all of these birds have similar internal and external features for survival. What are some of those internal and external structures?
Another Adaptation: Behavior What are some behaviors that birds use to survive changing climates? What are some behaviors that mammals use to survive changing climates? What are some other examples of behavior that increase survival in organisms?
