Genitals: the outside parts of the reproductive system. Male Female

Male genitals The outside parts are the penis and scrotum. Baby boys are born with a sleeve of skin on their penises called the foreskin. In a circumcision, the doctor removes the foreskin. This is almost always done immediately after birth. It is generally simpler to wash the penis, and decreases the risk of a urinary tract infection. The penis is normal, whether it has been circumcised or not.

Female genitals The female genitals are collectively called the vulva. The vulva includes the labia and clitoris.

Ovulation The releasing of a mature egg (ovum) from an ovary. Happens every 20 -40 days. A woman doesn’t usually know when it happens. In a couple of weeks, she will menstruate.

Menstruation The lining of the uterus (the blood and tissue) is, along with an unfertilized ovum, shed out through the vagina. A fresh, new lining is built up for the next month.

Intercourse A kind of sexual touch when the penis is in the vagina. Ejaculation is when semen, a fluid carrying sperm, comes out of the penis. If the male ejaculates during intercourse – or even if the male ejaculates onto her labia, without ever putting the penis inside the vagina – sperm can swim up into the uterus and tubes in search of an egg to fertilize.

Fertilization When sperm enters an egg. There need to be millions of sperm because that way thousands will find their way into the fallopian tube, and hundreds will find the egg. By bumping into the egg, they gradually wear down away the protein coat, until one finally gets inside.

Implantation The fertilized egg finishes travelling down the fallopian tube, which takes a week or so. It will then “nest” into the uterine wall. The combination of fertilization and implantation is called conception. It means that a pregnancy has begun.
