GLOBAL CHANGE “Changes in the global environment (Including alterations in the climate, land productivity, oceans or other water resources, atmospheric chemistry, and ecological systems) that may alter the capacity of the Earth to sustain life. ”
IAI’s MISSION “IAI’s mission is to develop the capacity to understand the integrated impacts of present and future global changes on regional and continental environments in the Americas and to promote collaborative research and informed action at all levels. ” (SAC, 1997)
IAI’s GOAL To augment the scientific capacity of the region to Better understand the global change related phenomena and their socioeconomic implications, and To next promote, at all levels, the dissemination of the emerging information.

SUMMER INSTITUTE ON: VULNERABILITY ASSOCIATED WITH CLIMATE CHANGE AND VARIABILITY IN CENTRAL AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research
OBJETIVES OF THE COURSE Strengthen the local and regional capacity to deal with vulnerability associated with climatic variability/change and extreme events; Provide participants with a comprehensive and integrative framework approach to better understand climate variability/change and its potential impacts on productive sectors in Central America and the Caribbean: understanding climate variability and the potential use of climate forecasts, planning mitigation strategies ahead and dealing with socioeconomic impacts; Train local professionals on issues related to climate vulnerability (in disasters prevention, water resources management, agriculture planning, tourism, health, etc) through the understanding and application of climate forecasts into the policy and decision making processes. Discussion of a few case studies; Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research
