Our Body’s Power Station § § § Muscles are a connection of tissues Converts energy into pulling power Protects bones and controls movement Gives outline and posture to bodies Linked to nearly every body system
Different Types of Muscles § Skeletal Muscle - wraps around the bone § Cardiac Muscle - only found by the heart, helps the heart beat § Smooth Muscle - you can’t control, e. g. allows you to eat
1. Muscular and Skeletal Systems § Skeletal system has 206 bones: § Supports body § Makes red and white blood cells § Protects organs § Muscles are attached to bones in pairs § Allows independent movement
§ If the muscular system was removed § Your bones will be un-protected § You will have no strength § You will not be able to move properly
2. Muscular and Nervous Systems § All muscles are controlled by nervous system § Nervous system consists of: § Spinal cord, brain, nerves § Nerves deliver messages to and from the brain
§ Lets us jump, run and lift things (voluntary) § If the weather is cold your nerves will tell the muscles to contract and produce heat (involuntary) § If the muscular system was removed § We will have no way to move around
3. Muscular and Respiratory Systems § Diaphragm in the chest helps us breathe § Diaphragm is the main breathing muscle § The lungs rest on the diaphragm § Helps us breathe when we are not doing exercise
§ If the muscular system was removed § It will be very hard to breathe, movement will be very limited
4. Muscular and Digestive Systems § Muscles push food down the throat § The muscles in your stomach and the acids work together to churn up food § Muscles push the rest of the food through the intestinal tract
§ If the muscular system was removed § It may not be possible to digest food § We would not survive without food
5. Muscular and Circulatory Systems § Your heart is the most important muscle in your body § It pumps blood all around the body § Your heart will become stronger when it is always exercised
§ If the muscular system was removed § You will not be able to breathe § Blood will not get around your body
Investigating a Spinal Cord Injury § Loss of movement because muscles will not receive messages § Loss of sensation as your body will not know how to maintain temperature § Difficulty in breathing as muscles such as diaphragm becomes weak
§ Neurogenic shock is when heart rate slows and blood pressure decreases § There is no way to reverse the damage § Treatment focuses on prevention and rehabilitation
Did you Know? § That your heart will beat about 3 million times in a lifetime § Your largest muscle is the Gluteus Maximus (bottom) § There are more then 600+ voluntary muscles in the body § Takes 17 muscles in your face to smile § Your hand has 20 different muscles
Did you know? § Takes 43 muscles to frown § You take 5, 000 steps per year using your leg muscles § We need 72 muscles to speak § Your busiest muscles are your eye muscles; they move 100, 000 times a day
Conclusion § If we didn't have a muscular system we would not survive § Your body relies on the muscular system § The muscular system is critical to how the human body works today § Without the muscular system: § § § Blood cannot be pumped around the body Food cannot be digested We would not be able to move
