How ◦ A neighbourhood initiative designed by the residents, for the residents; mobilize, organize and prioritize according to the unique qualities, assets and aspirations of each neighbourhood ◦ Outcomes have included increased sense of belonging, increased community relationships, and increased community safety Bring Everyone along in the journey
Urban vs. Rural Experience What Initiative Community Associations The City supports neighbourhood members to organize as non-profit boards Community Mobilizer/ Block Connector The City/FCSS equips community members to meet individual neighbours on their block Spark Grants The City/FCSS funds self-driven projects to convene neighbours Activities Social events and board meetings where residents can gather, meet, and get to know one another and are empower to speak for their community Community Mobilizer trains Block Connectors, who go on to host social events with their neighbours Grant funds available for neighbourhood events on a matching basis Intended Outcomes FCSS Outcomes from neighbour work: 1) Community is connected and engaged 2) Community needs are identified and addressed
Block Connectors & Spark Grants v. Evening session to equip residents to become Block Connectors v. Bi-annual meetings with Connectors to follow up, share stories, and get more motivation v. Led by Community Mobilizer Nora Smith ØSPARK Grants are a one time activity based grant to facilitate community based and organized events ØSPARK grants are up to $1000 of matching community dollars. 2 part training, build own tools, location to replicate environment What is possible – Wood Turning Course, Community Park
