Folliculitis is inflammation or infection that can affect one or more hair follicles. Hair follicles are the small cavities that surround the roots of your hair.

FURUNCLES Is also known as a "boil. " A boil is a tender, dome-shaped skin lesion caused by an infection around a hair follicle with Staphylococcus aureus.

CARBUNCLE A group of pus-filled bumps forming a connected area of infection under the skin. Carbuncles form when one or more hair follicles get infected. They often occur on the back of the neck, shoulders or thighs.

PEDUCULOSIS Pediculosis is an infestation of the hairy parts of the body or clothing with the eggs, larvae or adults of lice. The crawling stages of this insect feed on human blood, which can result in severe itching. Head lice are usually located on the scalp, crab lice in the pubic area and body lice along seams of clothing.

STEVENS-JOHNSON SYNDROME Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) is a rare, serious disorder of the skin and mucous membranes. It's usually a reaction to medication that starts with flu-like symptoms, followed by a painful rash that spreads and blisters. Then the top layer of affected skin dies, sheds and begins to heal after several days.

PEMPHIGUS Pemphigus is a disease that causes blisters and sores on the skin or mucous membranes, such as in the mouth or on the genitals. Pemphigus can occur at any age, but it's most often seen in people who are middle-aged or older. It tends to be a longlasting (chronic) condition, and some types can be lifethreatening without treatment. Treatment with medication usually controls it.

Azathioprine and mycophenolate mofetil are the first line of steroid-sparing treatment. Rituximab is extremely effective in recalcitrant pemphigus, when other treatments fail to control the disease

HERPES ZOSTER Herpes zoster is viral infection that occurs with reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus. It is usually a painful but self-limited dermatomal rash. Symptoms typically start with pain along the affected dermatome, which is followed in 2 -3 days by a vesicular eruption.

Herpes zoster is usually treated with orally administered acyclovir. Other antiviral medications include famciclovir and valacyclovir.

HERPES SIMPLEX The herpes simplex virus, also known as HSV, is an infection that causes herpes. Herpes can appear in various parts of the body, most commonly on the genitals or mouth. There are two types of the herpes simplex virus.

HSV-1: primarily causes oral herpes, and is generally responsible for cold sores and fever blisters around the mouth and on the face. HSV-2: primarily causes genital herpes, and is generally responsible for genital herpes outbreaks.
