Integrating HOSA in the Classroom Health Science and HOSA: A Healthy Partnership

HOSA is 100% Curricular • HOSA is designed to be an instructional tool that extends the school day. • Outcomes that are difficult to achieve in the classroom can be accomplished through HOSA.

HOSA for ALL Students • 100% affiliation assures that no student feels left out of HOSA activities. • Find ways to pay dues (donations, fund raising) for those with financial challenges, or those who choose not to pay.

HOSA As Classroom Leadership • Students elect one representative from each class to serve on the Executive Council. • The elected representative provides HOSA updates each day at the end of class. • Some teachers allow “HOSA Time” as a reward at the end of class if instructional objectives were achieved.

HOSA As Classroom Leadership • Allow a HOSA officer to present a certificate of appreciation to guest speakers. • Have students write “thank you notes” to guest speakers as a HOSA activity. • HOSA can paint the classroom, purchase equipment, etc. , to contribute to the classroom.

Competitive Events as Instructional Tools • After each unit with a great deal of terminology – use MEDICAL or DENTAL SPELLING as a review activity. • Note: Some teachers modify the event by having the students define and spell the term.

Make HOSA a Part of Good Instruction • Make sure HOSA activities in the classroom are part of the lesson plan and support instructional objectives. • Kids learn best when they are ENGAGED in the learning process, and having FUN. • Make sure that ALL students feel a part of HOSA in the classroom.

HOSA Time Outside the Classroom is Still Teaching Time • Never underestimate the value of the teacher/HOSA advisor as a role model for students. • Use your HOSA time to get to know your students, reach out to those with challenges, and celebrate the worth of individual HOSA members!
