Reflective Practice
How do you currently integrate communication (written and oral) into your teaching?
Three Goals 1. Communication is a worthwhile and valuable goal to integrate into your teaching practice, no matter your discipline or class size. 2. Integrating communication will make your life and your students’ lives easier. 3. You have support and resources on this campus to integrate communication.
Integrating Written and Oral Communication
Why? ● ● Promote deep level content learning Encourage student engagement Enhance valued competencies Provide multiple opportunities for practice across academic career ● Help to prevent plagiarism ● Align with UNC Charlotte learning outcomes
How? ● Provide direct instruction on disciplinary expectations and conventions ● Incorporate low stakes communicating-to-learn and reflective activities ● Support instructor, peer, and self formative feedback ● Assign a variety of disciplinary texts ● Emphasize process approach (draft, feedback, revision)
Examples in Practice (Small Section) • Sequence formal projects by breaking into parts – – – Proposal Literature Review/Annotated Bibliography Outline Draft(s) Practice Presentations • Provide formative feedback (peers, instructor, and self) • Incorporate reflective assignments focused on process and progress
