Development of NSS Master schedule • Q 3 -Q 4 2016 - ESS conducted a major project schedule review. This resulted in rebaselining of the working plan for project completion including key delivery MS: – – Beam on Target -> October 2020 Beam in First Instrument –> Feb 2021 (new key milestone). Start of User Program -> Aug 2023 Basis for NSS project Master Schedule V 3. 0 • Q 1 -Q 2 2017 - Schedule integration meetings with Accelerator, Target & ICS – Updated version of NSS project Master Schedule (V 3. 2) • Q 1 -Q 2 2017 - TG 2 meetings with 10 instruments (ODIN, ESTIA, DREAM, C-SPEC, MAGIC, BEER, BIFROST, SKADI, T-REX and HEIMDAL) & design update reviews of LOKI & NMX – Commencement of hot commissioning for the first 8 neutron instruments is closely aligned with the schedules presented by those instrument build teams at TG 2. This order matches well with the NSS “Early Science Success” strategy – Basis for NSS project Master Schedule V 3. 4

NSS Installation & Comm. Schedule On-site activities in phase 4 (instrument installation and cold commissioning) Q 2 2017 – First release. Aligned with / part of “NSS project Master Schedule V 3. 4 1. NBOA aligned and installed when the neutron beam ports are installed in the monolith over a period of ~ 6 months in 2019 2. Bunker construction follow installation of the NBOA, until Q 4 2019, when access will be given to the first neutron instruments for in-bunker installation and alignment - Priority will be in order of TG 5 3. Neutron Instrument assembly outside of the bunker, in the same priority order, can occur as access to D 01, D 03, E 01 or E 02 is given (according to the Instr. Spec. access dates) and as installation resources become available. 1. Four open bunker periods (each ~ 3 months long) are scheduled between Beam on Target and Start of User Program. - Priority in-bunker access will be given to instruments which are due to begin hot commissioning before the next open bunker period.

Back-up instruments (9 -11) Meetings held during summer 2017 with each instrument (NMX, SKADI, T-REX). Identified critical MS dates for potential switch to earlier (more aggressive) schedule. • Default schedule -> TG 5 after “first 8 instruments” • Keep aggressive schedule alive in parallell (until critical MS) Potential switch could be considered if one or more of the current first eight instrument projects suffers a major delay: – Early science success (for example SANS vs SANS) – Access dates for buildings (hence installation start date) changes

Proposed TG 3 dates Subject for discussion First official TG 3 in August 2018

Proposed TG 3 dates Subject for discussion First official TG 3 in August 2018 (for whole integrated system) Follow order of instrument 1 -15 To be discussed further in the afternoon workshops today.

Critical instrument related installations before BOT • NBOA (all 15 instruments before BOT) – Design & Procurement by Instr. teams (support & approval from NSS) – Alignment by NSS / Installation by TD • Baseplates (all 15 instruments before BOT) – Design & procurement by NSS (cost shared with instrument) – Installation by NSS • Bunker wall feed through (first 8 before BOT) – Design & procurement by Instr. teams (support and approval from NSS) – Installation as part of Bunker installation (before BOT) with the participation of Instr. Teams to be defined. • Temporary shielding (beamstop) – Needs depending on state of in-bunker installations done prior to BOT – Generic shielding blocks sourced by NSS as most flexible and cost effective solution (tbd)

Current (internal) issues ESS integrated schedule • Solutions for NBOA alignment area (pre-installation in monolith) – Permanent workshop area not available before BOT • Optimization of schedule for Bunker & TD monolith installations (baseplates, NBOA inserts, light shutters etc) – highly integrated with each other but also with SKANSKA construction of instrument halls (complex building schedule) • Earthquake requirements and crane classifications Detailed schedule discussions with CF & Target ongoing

Next steps on project schedule (by IKON-14) • NSS master schedule depends critically on the progress completion of “upstream” projects, i. e. Conventional Facilities (CF), Accelerator, Target and ICS projects • NSS project maintains close contact with those projects to be able to adapt the NSS schedule to mitigate impact of slippages on those projects. • Before next IKON Accelerator project will be re-baselined, and more will be known about risk of slippages in CF & Target projects. NSS intend to issue a revised schedule for the neutron instruments in time for discussion at the next IKON-14 meeting (in February 2018). Final 13

Continued discussions of project schedule in the afternoon workshop sessions 1. firm up critical TG 3 dates for each instrument, 1. obtain estimates from the instrument teams on the time and resources for a) in-bunker assembly and alignment, b) cave assembly and fit out, and c) Assembly/alignment of neutron guide & shielding between bunker & cave 2. gather preferences of the instrument teams for sequencing of installation in areas above, and estimates of time required for cold commissioning, 1. understand what components are to be “pre-assembled” at host laboratories 1. Obtain estimates of what human resources the instrument team plan to provide for on-site installation and commissioning 14
