Integrated Math Section 3. 2 Slope
• Rise 1 st • Then run!
• Fall 1 st • Then crawl!
• Always crawl and run forward.
Finding slope from a graph when both axes have the same increments • Locate two points. • Start at the left most point • Numerator Count spaces up (+) or down (-) to be on the same horizontal line as the second point. • Denominator Count spaces to the right to get to the point
Finding slope using coordinates •
Special slopes • A horizontal line has a slope of zero.
• A vertical line has a slope that is undefined.
#1 Find the slope of the line containing (6, 4) and (6, 10) #2 Find the slope of the line containing (7, 3) and (8, 3)
Find the slope of the line containing the points given. •
Real Life • Find the slope for this scenario.
The Slope Song (tune of London Bridges) When the line is falling down, slope is negative! When the line is going up, slope is positive. When the line just stays the same, slope is zero! What’s the one that’s undefined, undefined? Oh, it’s the vertical line.

• Perpendicular lines- two lines that have slopes that are opposite reciprocals of each other. If a line has a slope of 2/3. What is the slope of a line that is perpendicular to it?
Graphing a line when given a point and the slope #1 Plot the given point #2 Use the slope to rise and run or fall and crawl from the plotted point. #3 Mark a new point #4 Use a ruler and draw the line connecting the two points. #5 Don’t forget arrows!
• Graph a line through (2, 3) with a slope of 1/4
Graph the following line: - it goes through the point (-2, 5) - it is perpendicular to a line with a slope of 4 Do you have enough information to graph this line?
Are the lines parallel, perpendicular or neither? Line #1 contains the points (4, 3) and (2, 6) Line #2 contains the points (0, 0) and (3, 2) **Hint-find the slopes of the two lines
