The absolute value of -5 is written as |-5|. Both 5 and -5 are five places from zero, so the value of |5| and |-5| is 5.

Adding integers: With the same sign The sum of two positive integers is positive. The sum of two negative integers is negative. 5+5=? -5+-5=? 5+5=10 and -5+-5= -10

Adding integers: With different signs To add two integers with different signs, find the difference in their absolute values. The sum has the sign of the integer with the greatest absolute value. 9 + -2 = (Think “the difference in |9| and |-2| is 7” and the sign of the greatest number is positive, so the answer is 7. )
