INTD 59 bathroom design basics
five basic steps in bath design 1. gathering client & project information 2. setting priorities 3. researching and selecting product 4. doing design and layout (space planning) 5. drawing up a plan checklist before submitting design
client profile • list client’s physical characteristics & abilities that influence space use & interaction • color preference & style influence client’s feeling of well-being
collect project information • thorough assessment of the infrastructure of existing space or set of drawings for new construction • list priority items identified in client meetings • note design elements affecting space planning • appraise construction restraints & evaluate impact on design
design goal establish a visual style & functional goal for space • analyze overall space & possible design options • carefully examine volume, form, line, texture, light, scale & proportion, balance, contrast, & unity • select plumbing fixtures that reflect client’s ergonomic profile and style as well as function in the space—visit showrooms • review manufacturer’s product installation guidelines with plumber & contractor before laying out final plans
design goal • carefully consider mechanical systems before any construction starts (hvac ducts, registers, return air grills, chases, vents, water supply lines, drain pipes) • address all 4 layers of light within the space—comply with code!
design goal • use or movement of architectural elements must be done early in space planning stage • movement into and within space must be carefully planned—size of doorway and clearance space at each task area should meet or exceed minimums
basic bathroom • equipped with a toilet, vanity sink, tubshower • arrange fixtures & design finishes to be functional, safe & relaxing
children’s bathroom plan must ensure comfortable access to vanity sink & faucet at all stages of growth • lower drawer converts to a step • side mounted faucets • stacked towel bars • drawers at various heights
master suite bathing is just one of the activities—plan for additional amenities: • kitchenette • television • exercise equipment • coffee/beverage center • lounging furniture
wet rooms the forefront in luxury bathroom design— • floor to ceiling tile • ample floor space for varied activities • wall mounted fixtures • freestanding tub • feeling of serenity—subtle finishes & colors • a ‘spa-like’ experience • • • massage tables soaking tubs steam shower rooms saunas chromatherapy tubs
wet rooms
planning checklist • analyze how the space relates to adjacent rooms • analyze space use • select plumbing fixtures • lay out space plan • verify space clearances • plan lighting layout • locate ventilation
planning checklist • • • locate towel bars & accessories check structural blocking & sound control select surfaces create detail drawings for surface materials prepare color boards make up specification books
