INSTRUCTOR GUIDE This guide is a general overview of learning modules and steps in a unit about the butterfly life-cycle and observing the metamorphosis of a caterpillar to a butterfly – more specifically, the “Painted Lady” butterfly. The modules can be used in any order and with whole group or individually.
Standards List of standards – (based on California 2 nd grade Common Core) Reading Standards for Informational Text • Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. • Determine the meaning of words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 2 topic or subject area
Standards - Contined • By the end of year, read and comprehend informational texts, including history/social studies, science, and technical texts, in the grades 2– 3 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end ofthe range. • With guidance and support from adults, use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers.
Standards - Contined • Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences. CA • Demonstrate understanding of word relationships and nuances in word meanings. • a. Identify real-life connections between words and their use (e. g. , describe foods that are spicy or juicy).
Objectives a. The student (2 nd/3 rd grade) will be able to correctly name all 4 stages in the butterfly life cycle. b. The student (2 nd/3 rd grade) will be able to correctly narrate the names of each stage that a butterfly will go through during its life. c. The student (2 nd/3 rd grade) will be able to narrate the different activities involved when performing a research activity. d. The student (2 nd/3 rd grade) will be able to make a simple observation, including drawing a picture of his/her observation, labeling the picture, and writing at least one sentence describing what the student observes.
UNIT DESIGN The main purpose of this unit is to introduce students to the principles of the scientific method and scientific observation via the butterfly life-cycle. This unit is intended to introduce young students to the scientific method and the butterfly life-cycle. This unit uses CONSTRUTIVIST learning theory in its approach. Again, students are introduced to key concepts and vocabulary in Scientific Method and the Butterfly Life-Cycle. When students are older and are required to learn about Scientific Method, they will have been exposed to the knowledge and will have a past experience with it via a butterfly metamorphosis observation.
Scientific Method There are four links or activities that go along with scientific method. You may wish to spend several days on each activity. Again, these activities can be with the whole class, groups of students, or individual students. For the 3 rd activity, please take note of the materials needed. Suggestions: Make sure materials are provided if students need them Provide students plenty of time to play around with the site o Let students peruse several times. Encourage students to take the quizzes Encourage students to give feedback
Butterfly Life-Cycle Project For the caterpillar observation, caterpillars will need to be procured. Some teachers use caterpillars found outside. I purchase “painted lady” caterpillars from the Nature Gift Store.
Butterfly Life-Cycle Project The purpose of this portion of the unit is to allow students to observe the metamorphosis process and participate in a real observation.
For this project, students will need to familiarize themselves with the butterfly life-cycle. The Butterfly life-cycle section of the website includes modules on metamorphosis and observing a caterpillar. Even if students have gone over the modules, it is important to model the caterpillar drawing and sentence writing.
