Instruction Writing YEAR 2 HOME LEARNING ENGLISH
Starter Write as many time adverbs as you can remember.
What do we need when writing a full set of instructions? A title Sub-heading A small introduction A list of what you will need to complete the instructions – You can use bullet points. A picture Time adverbs Numbers Imperative verbs The method
Title and introduction Your title should be short and simple. An introduction can be used to ask a question, similar to the example – ‘are you learning about the continents of the world? ’. It can also be used to give a brief overview of what the instructions will be about – what will you be making, is it difficult to make, do you need help from an adult, things like that
List of things needed for your instructions This could be resources or ingredients needed to complete the instructions. On this list you should think about everything that is needed to complete every instruction. It is usually quite useful to do this after writing the method. That way you know exactly what you need for the list. You can use bullet points for this list, and it should have a sub-heading. A sub-heading is a smaller title used to introduce a part of the writing, rather than the whole piece.
The method is the main part of the set of instructions. It is what you have been doing for the past few days. In your method you will need: • A sub-heading telling people it is the method • Numbers • A range of time adverbs • It should be in order Am I forgetting anything?
Don’t forget bossy verbs! Remember bossy verbs is another name for imperative verbs! They are verbs that are commands and should be used either at the start of an instruction or after the time adverb. You can add more adverbs to a bossy verb to describe how you might do something First, chop the wood carefully. Carefully is a new adverb that I have added onto the sentence to show to chop the wood.
Use our every time we write rules Don’t forget our every time we write rules. For the Mums and Dads these are rules that we use in every piece of our writing. They include: Capital letters at the start of sentences and for names. Full stops at the end of sentences. Writing each line next to a margin. Using finger spaces between our words. Trying our best with our spelling and handwriting. Trying to remember any punctuation we have learnt – question marks, exclamation marks.
Today’s task You need to fill out the instruction template that I have sent with instructions on how to make a delicious sandwich. The filling of your sandwich can be anything you want, and if you have the ingredients you could even try following your instructions to make your own designed sandwich. I will also post the example instructions to help.
