Institutions behind music magazines
Bauer Media • Bauer Media is a division of the Bauer Media Group, Europe’s largest privately owned publishing group. The group offers over 300 magazines in 15 countries as well as online, TV and radio stations. • The main successful Brand names (amongst nearly 80 others) include ‘Kerrang!’, ‘MOJO’, ‘Q’ and ‘Heat’. • Founded in 1875 in Hamburg, Germany and their annual revenue (2013) is € 2. 4 billion. The music magazines pictured – owned by Bauer Media all feature men which shows that the representation of gender is not equal. Although there were some female artists, 95% of the covers featured on these rock/indie/punk covers were of men.
IPC Media • International Publishing Company is one of the UK’s leading consumer magazine and digital publishers, with a large portfolio selling over 350 million copies each year. • IPC Media groups its current titles under three magazine divisions each focusing on a core audience. These are Connect - Targeting the mass market for women, Southbank Targeting upmarket women and Inspire Targeting the market for men.
Connect Southbank • As you can see the two music magazines that they own are under the category for men which could be seen as sexist. NME magazine is a rock magazine and Uncut we don’t know the genre. Inspire
• When you google NME front cover the majority of the artists on the front cover are male. Even when woman are on the front they don’t look overly feminine.
When typing into google uncut magazine front covers, not one woman artist was shown.
Immediate media co Own brands such as top gear, match of the day and radio times. Immediate Media Company Limited is a combined publishing house containing the former assets of Origin Publishing, Magicalia and BBC Magazines. It was formed on 1 November 2011 and is owned by Exponent Private Equity. Immediate media co own a huge range of magazines from kids magazines such as cbeebies and magazines for adults such as the made for mums magazine. It is hard to criticize the company because of the huge range of magazines and they seem to cater for every ethnicity, age and background. On the website they even include a filter so that you can refine the type of magazine that you are looking for this includes age and category but looking at the choice of magazines what I have noticed is that the magazines can be seen as stereotypical as the magazines such as cooking and home items are aimed towards women with very feminine colours such as the pinks and purples, in contrast the male magazines include colours such as blue.
